Don't forget how the big boxes leave our landscape looking like doodie. Know how hard it is to keep an empty wal-mart filled? Pretty darn hard.

I know because I did a story last year (I'm a journalist) and some of the people who wanted to buy the buildings COULDN'T....I think it has something to do with tax write-offs.

I contacted Wal-Mart, who has a big happy smiley face on their real estate site regarding this story-- I absolutely HATE wal-mart but it would have ended up looking somewhat positive for them-- stories of unique places their empty stores became-- and they were absolutely horrible to me.

They played me along until the deadline and then dropped me. I think they were hoping to make my story sink.

that's to what I was also referring. Except for my very early childhood, I can't really remember buying local strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or cherries at the grocery store.
Cherries seem to always be from MI or WA
raspberries from S.A. or CA
blueberries from NJ
strawberries from CA or S.A.
same pkg at my local grocery store or Whole Foods or Costco. If I want local raspberries I have to go to the farmer's market. My local Shaw's hannaford's health food grocer or Whole Foods all carry the same brands as my old Costco did at home.

We've been getting tp at Costco but I really want to switch to "greener" stuff so I'm thinking I'll go to Pharmaca (not local but smaller) next or just get it at PCC. I like Costco and shop there but some of their stuff has just so much wasteful packaging

They're actually working on ways to decrease the amount of rigid plastic used in packaging. Buying big packages often means LESS packaging per item used.

It does bug me, though, that each roll of TP is individually wrapped. I mean, what's up with that?? (yeah, it's probably for business customers who need to have the TP protected in public environments...)

True indeed! I'm glad they are working for less because I do shop there a bit.

For us it's not so much a frugal issue as a "support your local businesses" issue.

We *try* to support the local economy as much as we can afford to and make an effort to buy in this order:

#1 - Don't buy it if it's a want rather than a need

#2 - Buy it used

#3 - Buy it locally

#4 - Buy from a national retailer
