some newbie questions - 18 month old DD with possible intolerances ?

Hi all, I have tried to go back through all the threads to look for more information, but I am getting lost in the many threads, there is WAY too much stuff !! It's all so fascinating and just so full of facts, you're all amazing!

Anyhoo..... I have a 17.5 month old DD (and a 5.5 year old DS) and I have been wondering for a while if my DD could have some food intolerances. She doesn't really have any symptoms other that a teensy bit of eczema during the colder months (easily managed with QV cream) but she is a shocker of a sleeper still, at her age. She wakes every 2 hours on a good night, and we have lots of much worse nights.

Up till very recently I have just assumed it was becasue we co-sleep and she is waking up to nurse. But just lately I am looking at her waking a bit differently and have noticed that she doens't seem to want to nurse immeditately. She will wake with a cry and then whimper and moan, while writhing and moving around a bit. After about 30 seconds or so, she will then start to ask for mama and boobie. Once I lift my shirt for her, she snuggles in and nurses, but sometimes she will still whimper a bit even then. Sometimes (if the moon and stars are aligned right ! lol) she will then go back to sleep without nursing, she just whimpers and stirs in her sleep. She sounds so unhappy, it breaks my heart!

The reason I am asking here is, I have been toying with the idea of night weaning her, as I am really feeling the strain of nearly 2 years of no more than about 3 hours continuous sleep a night! I am a bi*ch to my dear son, and am so cranky because I am tired! BUT I don't want to put my DD through the stress of night weaning her if she has other issues going on. I'd rather get to the bottom of hte reasons for her waking first.

Man, this is a bit rambly sorry.

Ok, so what I am asking is...... do you think that frequent night waking in an 18 month old could be a sign of a food intolerance ?? Should she have more symptoms than that??

I took her for allergy testing last week, and the lady did "vega testing" where they placed a metal 'rod' under my DD's arm and then touched her toe with a probe. They then placed small vials of the possible allgergin into the machine and they judged her reaction by the sounds the machine made. Sorry, I didn't ask too many questions about it and now wish I had. She came back as positive for yeast, wheat and gluten, and also lactose. She was also a bit acidic and I was told to avoid 'red' foods.

I am trying to get together a bit of an eating plan for us to try this all out, but I am drowning under too much information. I am researching all the time and just confusing myself. If you have any thoughts for me, I'd greatly appreciate them !! I am also very interested in your stories, if frequent waking was in your LO's history and if food elimination helped.

Thanks so much for reading this far!

How are your dd's stools? What is the eczema like? Does she have dark circles under her eyes? Sleep disturbances can definitely be related to food allergies. I don't know anything about Vega testing, but we did allopathic and alternative testing, and my feeling is that neither one is perfect and elimination diets and/or food journals are really important to figure out the rest of the puzzle.

sleep issues are my DD's main symptom (also drinking a lot, apparently to soothe her stomach). If you've already had testing (which I've never heard of), then try taking her/you off of yeast, gluten, dairy and see if that's the issue (gluten and dairy are two of the top ones anyway). If it doesn't get you what you want, I'd take out soy too, since milk and soy go hand in hand, as intolerances go. If it works, you can keep bfing and have your sleep too!

Her bowel movements are pretty well within the normal range I'd say. She's had a few episodes of being a bit clogged up, but I just gave her some stewed prunes and she was fine in a day or two. Mostly she is pretty regular and they look pretty normal to me but sometimes they are rather dry I guess, more so than I would expect considering she breastfeeds an awfull lot! She doesn't seem to strain when doing a BM though.

I am going to eliminate lactose and gluten - we're already trying a few different things, like lactose free milk and all the gluten free foods I could find in the supermarket! We eat fairly well really, have vege's most dinnertimes or pasta etc. The gluten free pasta is great, and we love the buckwheat pancakes too.

Is it ok to just eliminate the lactose - ie we are having lactose free stuff like the milk and I am going to track down the yoghurt too. I have heard it said that hard cheeses are ok too, as they don't have much lactose as other milk products. We haven't had any cheese yet, but it's only been a few days!

The yeast is going to be tricky for me. It seems to be in lots of things that we use and I am finding it harder to track it all down.

Thanks for your replies so far ladies, I do really appreciate them. I feel a bit bad asking these questions when really, our problems are so minor. Some of the issues you guys are dealing with must be just so mind blowing. I admire you all so much for sticking to your tough diets and just plowing on, all for the benefit of your children. You are all amazing!!

For what it's worth, my 5 year old is a tough cookie, he is driving me to distraction and I am really struggling with him, I am hopefull that eliminating some foods from his diet will help with his behaviour too. So, we are doing it tough here in some respects, just not quite as tough as some of you !!
Thanks again.

Oh sorry, I forgot.
She doesn't have any dark circles under her eyes.
Her eczema is just roughened patches, usually on her ankles, and her elbows. Seems to be on the right hand side mostly. It doesn't really get too bad unless I don't apply the QV cream regularly. A year ago it was lot worse, with really red patches on her face too. But we didn't know it was eczema then.
We don't use any products in her bath, just fresh water, unless she is really grotty and then we use the QV bath oil to cleanse her.

I could've written this myself. I know exactly what you are talking about. That is our nights most nights here and it is mentally and physically exhausting. Most nights when I am in the midst of being sleep deprived I too think that way, but then I remember that this is the only comfort my LO has and the reality of it for us is that it would not make our situation any better since the reason he is up is because of his scratching with the eczema.

How is your LO during the day? Is she easy going and not seem to have any symptoms? If it is an intolerance or allergy it would most likely be bothersome during the day too. Have you tried not co-sleeping? That may be the solution w/o nightweaning purposely. We co-sleep too, but I know there are times where he sleeps on a mattress in another room with my dh at times so I can get a little uninterrupted sleep that he does sleep rather well.

Good luck with eliminating the dairy and gluten. If it is those you should likely see a change within a few weeks. Gluten is in pretty much everything so really try to read labels very carefully.

Hope that helps a bit.

Take care

That is so weird... DD's eczema seems to concentrate on her right side too. I wonder what that's about?

Oh- and I wanted to say watch out for the buckwheat stuff- pancake mixes, packaged foods- most of it has wheat in it too.

So you only have to cut lactose, not any other dairy proteins?
