yay!
little rowan arrived thursday night(17th) at 9:32 p.m.
8lbs 14oz and 19 1/2" with a 14 1/2" hc!
we're so excited to have him here with us. we're all just in love.
:
labor was so much longer than i expected, but it was pretty managable untill the last hour or so, so not too bad all in all! we had to deal with the crappy hospital and really annoying staff, and i think i almost had my gung ho hospital husband convinced to go back home once we got there! lol but thankfully we're good at being vocal about what we wanted and we were only there for about 3 hours before he was born.
i was in labor all day on thursday, but it wasn't till about 4pm that the ctx picked up to about 5 min apart. we decided to go check in at the hospital at around 6:30(at that point i felt like it was way too early and was wondering why i was there. still 5 min apart, pretty managable). about an hour later things got much more intense though. i was about 5cm and 100% effaced when they checked me. i got the crappy ob who i had never met before. we gave him our birth plan to look over and he sat in the corner and flipped through it.
baby was still swimming high at a +3 station. he was moving all over during the whole labor, never engaged untill my water broke, which happened a little after 9pm. this was right after i unstrapped myself from the monitors(after the witchy nurse who told me i couldn't, left the room lol) and got up to go to the bathroom. i had some intense ctx in there and then barely got back to the bed when it broke and splashed everyone all over the floor. i've never had my water break on the floor like that(always on the bed right before they came out), it was crazy! dh's legs were just soaked. lol thankfully he was wearing shorts and flip flops!
anyway, from past expierence i tried to tell the ob that he'd be here any minute after that happened. he checked me and said i was only an 8 and left it at that. i wanted to confirm with him that we weren't going to cut the cord after he was born, and he goes off about how "whoever wrote your birth plan doesn't know how things work. you can't leave the cord attached untill the placenta is out like it states!" lol we got into a mini argument with him while i'm in transition about how it's perfectly possible and we'd done it before and lots of people had done it before us too! lol so clueless.... all he could say was "i've never ever seen or heard of that being done!" lol
so i had another ctx and told him the baby was comming. he told me to breath through the next few and went to sit on a stool on the other side of the room! at this point i'm screaming that he's comming out right now and he dawdles on over after the nurse tells him the head's almost out! no one had moved up to that point(and i had just got back on the bed too) so the bed wasn't broken down or anything. he starts setting up the stirrups, and i'm like nu uh!
my imeadiate plan was to try to at least get up on my knees or try to squat or something, but he came down so quickly, (i could feel his head up in my belly slide down into my pelvis and start crowning all in one movement) i managed to get into the weirdest birthing position ever. lol i only ever got my feet to the bottom of the bed and i was up on my hands leaning backwards, doing sort of a backwards bridge! lol i yelled at dh to help support my back as i arched it and pushed his head right out. i wasn't having much of a contraction at the time, so i was able to push slower and easier, then i asked why he wasn't comming out(after the head was out and not realising i wasn't pushing any more and not having a contraction either! my kids have always just gushed out after the head was out before lol). the dr gets all snippy with me and says "your birth plan states you want the shoulders to be born naturally" it's a little funny now that it didn't occur to me i'd actually have to push the rest of him out. lol so i gave a little push while i arched my back again and he slid right out.
they put him right up on my chest and the ob went to sit and tap his fingers on the stool in the corner again. lol after a little while waiting on the placenta he just got up and told the nurse "call me when it comes out!" and left the room.
so they did end up leaving us alone, and respected most of our wishes(even if they were clueless, and even had to *make up* a waiver so he could room in with us!!). we're glad he's here and safe and healthy.
