FOREVER. Ok, maybe it just seems that way sometimes...
No, it can definitely be more than a week. And from what point are you starting the timer- the first symptoms (chewing, slobber, fussing), or when you see the tooth? DD has 2 teeth that I could see through the gums about 2 weeks ago, and they still haven't popped through yet.
I have been able to feel my DD's upper 2 year molars directly under the skin for a little over 2 months. As of yesterday they still haven't broken through. The bottom ones came through in a week when we were in Europe this spring. Thankfully, they seem to only bother her a few days at a time then we get about a week off.
DD1 would get a little fussy and then shazAM! A tooth would go from little lump to full tooth in about 2 days. She had all her teeth by a year.
DD2 is over a year and has a grand total 6 teeth. She spends more than a week at the "swollen/red" stage. And one tooth has broken through the gum but has been just a "sharp edge" at gum height for almost three weeks now (I don't count it as a tooth yet!).
i asked our pediatrician once and he said it just depends on the baby. some come in slow some super fast. my lo got his first one sorta fast then one day he had a second and we didn't even know it was coming in now he has two coming in and they are taking forever. so it even depends on the tooth i guess
I clicked on this thread right away because dd is in the midst of teething and has been for weeks! I am getting annoyed at her teeth because they are taking so long, if you can even really get annoyed at teeth. I can't remember it taking so long with my other two girls. I guess I just need to calm the heck down....
