How do I know if the diaper rash my 1 week old is from a food allergy? It looks like a red rash with little bumps around the anus. It just started a day or so ago and has gotten worse. He is constantly pooping, so could it be he's just irritated down there? I've never had this before with my other dc. I'm using some barrier cream to protect the skin. Anyway, please advise as to the signs of a food allergy diaper rash....by the way, he is ebf. Thanks!

Usually the allergy rash is a ring that's right around the anus that is red, inflamed, sometimes raw, that won't go away.
It's possible that it's just from all the pooping, but if it persists more than a few days with no improvement, you might look into food allergies.

Clean his bottom with plain water and cloths - no baby wipes. Flannel cloths are softer than washcloths. After he's clean, soak a cotton ball in breast milk and rub it all over his bottom. When his skin is dry, re-diaper. Change him really, really often.
If the rash doesn't improve w/in 6-8 hours, it's probably yeast. Those bumps you describe are characteristic of yeast, and it's pretty common for a baby to pick some up during birth.

Thank you for your help. I've been rinsing his bottom with plain water and changing him very frequently. I've also been using Earth Mama Angel Baby bottom balm at every change and it is almost completely gone. So I think it's just from him pooping all the time. I appreciate the replies!

: Especially if you or baby had antibiotics during the hospital stay. Also, just from reading personal stories throughout the years, it seems that they aren't reacting at 1 week usually. It seems to become more obvious around 4-6 weeks with rashes, excema, etc beginning. I don't know if there's any actual science or truth behind it, it's just what I've noticed. This thread is locked
