Egg allergy?

Thread Starter
I will preface this post by saying that I suspect DS has some food intolerances, due to behaviour issues, GERD as an infant, intermittent ring rash around his anus, constant daily whinging/irritability/crankiness/clinginess etc. But to date, I've been so overwhelmed with managing his behaviour that I haven't done much about figuring any of it out, except for giving him soy formula as the dairy formula caused lots of vomiting (lots of breastfeeding problems ... won't go into them here). He's back on cow's milk at the moment, as he no longer vomits from it.

However .... the real reason for my post ....

He had a sandwhich the other day with mayonnaise on it. It's the first time he's had mayo. 10 minutes after he finished his sandwhich (which of course was smeared all over his face) his face, particularly around his mouth, was red and raised, like welts. My MIL was there, and said that it looked very similar to her DS2 (my DH's brother) after he'd eaten egg.

So, the next day, I put a tiny bit of mayonnaise onto his cheek - a few minutes later, the same red, raised rash came up, only on the skin where I'd put the mayo.

DS, as far as I can remember, has never had cooked egg (e.g. scrambled egg), but he's had plenty of eggs in baked cakes and biscuits that I've made and I've never noticed a skin reaction like this before.

Do you all think it's likely that DS has an egg allergy?
If so, from what I've read, the egg protein changes when it's baked. So - should I avoid giving him ALL egg, or just raw egg. Can he eat baked cakes etc? Can he eat scrambled/boiled egg?
And, we're selective/delayed vaxers. He hasn't had his MMR yet, but I believe it contains trace amounts of albumin ..... should I avoid the MMR completely at this stage (with respect to egg allergy, no vax debates please)?

Thanks for all your help

I dont know what the right thing to do is, but, as a child I had skin reactions to eggs, but no reaction to actual eating them. Just to being touched on the skin.

My ds appears to have the same problem. We can't touch him if we have touched aggs or egg based products or his skin flares up. But, I can eat egg and he does fine.

Why not see an allergist?
You have a child obviously reacting to multiple foods. Now is the time to figure out what is causing the reactions. Milk and egg allergies can be very serious. You need an action plan.

We avoid all egg in an attempt to avoid reactions and hoping that he will outgrow the allergy at some point. It is also easier to teach a toddler in black and white instead of creating grey areas.

With respect to the MMR and egg allergy. Again I would talk to the allergist.

Almost all mayo has soy in it. Does he normally have soy? It could be something besides egg is all I'm saying. What other ingredients are in the mayo? If it's welts, it sounds like an IgE allergy (testable by skin scratch test).

And watch the milk. My DS was a projectile vomiter when I had milk and he was breastfed. Then we "thought" we outgrew it. It's been back over and over again, changing symptoms each time. So just be careful.
