Natural deodorant causing chafing

Thread Starter
I have been using Tom's natural deodorant in various scents for the past few months and over this time, my underarms have become increasingly chafed. I also have tried the mineral salt sticks and had the same issue with them. Anyone know what is up with this or what else I can use that won't lead to this problem???? I really dont want to go back to using an antiperspirant!

Thanks for any help!!!

DD1 has the same problem with TOM deodorant. She likes the fragrance and still uses it occassonally, but we won't be buying this again when the one package she has is finished off (which is taking her a really, really long time at this rate! )

Mostly she uses a deodorant crystal now. She's never had any problems with it, and neither have I (I've been using them for years.)

My advice is to try a different brand of natural deodorant- either a crystal or simply a different brand of roll on or stick than the one you've already tried. They all have slightly different formulations and what irritates one person's skin will be fine for another.

That's not fun.

I had the same trouble when I deviated from my normal calendula scent to the Tom's lemongrass and calendula scent. My armpits were raw and sore and horrid. It was just that particular scent though. Doesn't sound like that's the problem for you?
Have you tried the Weleda brand deodorant sprays? They're quite gentle. They aren't enough for my body, but I know several people who swear by them. Good luck finding something.

I have found the liquid roll-ons (crystal types, various brands) to be the least irritating to my skin.

Best wishes!

I use the liquid spray crystal.

I don't react to the Toms calendula scent either... but I really react to the newer ones that claim to have longer lasting protection or somthing like that. I find that my best line of defense is taking liquid chlorophyll.... then I am less smelly and the milder deoderants are just fine.

Off topic - How do you get your liquid chlorophyll in your body? I have some and have drank some twice. Um, not so tasty. I put a little in water once and I drank it straight the other time with a water "chaser". LOL

I had a bad reaction to Tom's of Maine deodorant as well. I beleive the one that I tried was unscented so it wasn't a fragrance in it that was bothering me. I stopped using it and the problem went away. I had the same problem with the crystal, but haven't tried a natural spray. I have since gone back to regular deodarant b/c it's the only kind that doesn't seem to bother me although even some of those bother my skin.

I've also reacted to the Tom's unscented, both solid and roll-on. I used it for a long time with no problem, and then one day I had a dry, sore rash under my arms. As much as I didn't like doing it, I switched back to Dove deodorant until the rash went away. I need to find something more natural after I run out of it.

I'm another one that had a bad reaction to Tom's. Actually, I think there's a natural deoderant thread around here somewhere that listed a ton of people who've had that same reaction...

My underarms are very chafed and red right now from the TOM and Queen Helene deos. I may try funk butter or Lush Aromaco next.

I know some people have had good results with just plain coconut oil. Anyone try this? And I mostly want to hear from you really "funky" mamas, not the ones who have never had an odor problem at all.
