Everyday Minerals rated a 3 on Skin Deep???

I ordered a bunch of stuff from them recently. I specifically looked my products up and I SWEAR they were a 1, green light. My friend was even here with me when I ordered. I've been having quite a few breakouts since starting it though, so I looked it up tonight to see if there could be a particular ingredient causing the trouble and all the foundations I could see were rated a 3, yellow light. I never would have ordered a 3. The page says last updated 3/30/08 though, so I have no idea what could have happened.

I was looking at Everyday Minerals on the Cosmetics Database today, too. Actually, I can't seem to find much of anything that's a green light.... :

I just saw this too! Most of what I use from them in in the 0 or 1 category, but it seems that the foundation/powder I use, and the blush are rating a 3! But, when I did a search to find make-up that had scores lower than 3 I only got about 2 companies and all the products under a 3 were lip & eye colors, no powders or blushes. :

I don't get it. That's why I was all excited about EM. I even got my friend to order it because her Bare Minerals was a 3 and this was a green light. I feel like I'm going crazy.

ETA: Yeah, I just looked on here and there was a thread in late June about non-toxic environmentally safe makeup and I said I use EM and all my stuff scores a one. I'd really like to know what happened and why less than a month ago Skin Deep said one and now three. I guess they can't be perfect and I could have looked each ingredient up myself. I'm just frustrated because I feel like I blew $40 thinking what I was getting was practically GOOD for my skin. Instead I've ended up with breakouts and something rated a number I'm not comfortable with.

It's the titanium dioxide in 117/120 of their products that's worrying me a little, at the moment. Of course, it looks as though titanium dioxide is in practically everything. Hmm.... Maybe that explains a few things! Anyway, this is from the Wikipedia page on titanium dioxide:

Quote:
Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen possibly carcinogenic to humans.[17] Titanium dioxide accounts for 70% of the total production volume of pigments worldwide. It is widely used to provide whiteness and opacity to products such as paints, plastics, papers, inks, foods, and toothpastes. It is also used in cosmetic and skin care products, and it is present in almost every sunblock, where it helps protect the skin from ultraviolet light.

With such widespread use of titanium dioxide, it is important to understand that the IARC conclusions are based on very specific evidence. This evidence showed that high concentrations of pigment-grade (powdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust caused respiratory tract cancer in rats exposed by inhalation and intratracheal instillation*. The series of biological events or steps that produce the rat lung cancers (e.g. particle deposition, impaired lung clearance, cell injury, fibrosis, mutations and ultimately cancer) have also been seen in people working in dusty environments. Therefore, the observations of cancer in animals were considered, by IARC, as relevant to people doing jobs with exposures to titanium dioxide dust. For example, titanium dioxide production workers may be exposed to high dust concentrations during packing, milling, site cleaning and maintenance, if there are insufficient dust control measures in place. However, it should be noted that the human studies conducted so far do not suggest an association between occupational exposure to titanium dioxide and an increased risk for cancer.
Now, granted, we wouldn't be breathing in too much powder each time we use the stuff, but we'd be getting a little bit over years and years. And who knows what letting it sink into the skin really does....

It looks like, in some products, titanium dioxide gets a socre of 6 while in others it merits a score of only 1. I assume that's because of the powder vs. non-powder distinction? Except that the concealer is a powder too.... :

You're not losing it. I use Suncat mineral makeup and it WAS rated as a 2 when I bought it. I even checked it against EM which was higher (EM was a 3 when I checked...a month or so ago). But now it's rated a 3 as well because of the TD. Sadly, it's the same score as the Neutrogena liquid foundation I used to use. But I love the minerals, it's so much lighter than the commercial liquid stuff. I just wish it was safer. With my rosacea I have to use something, for my own self-confidence.

Miessence has mineral makeup foundation which scores a 2 on skin deep. I think the scores have to do with particle size, not just that they contain titanium dioxide. The micronized TD is considered much more hazardous. I haven't used miessence yet, (I'm planning to when I run out of Bare Minerals), but my sister uses it and really likes it. They're not cheap, however.
