green vacuum shampoo

I've borrowed my parents vacuum shampooer and would like to clean carpets. We have a no shoe policy, but with dogs and that rule being broken a few times, they are dirty. Children are getting ready to crawl so I don't want chemicals on the floor. I've heard of using white vin. Anyone know?

seriously white vinegar works better than ANYTHIN I have ever tried. the best thing is that it removes the build up instead of leaving build up. no matter how much you try to get all that soap out, it still stays behind. if you don't have vinegar I would only use water. the hot water ones work wonderfully!

I had really good success with oxy clean/HOT water, and a serious rinse as well. No smell, and the carpets were clean.

we have also had good luck just using water in the steam cleaner, it heats it up really hot and seems to lift any dirt out of the carpet. For anything that doesn't come clean, DH has used a bit of oxyclean and then rinsed it well afterwards.
