Graphic Design Pricing

Up until recently I have never done extensive ad layouts. Most of what I do is for small businesses, very simple layouts and a lot of the same things. I have always incorporated my design price into the printing price and I have a "mark-up formula" that I use for that.

However I was just asked to do a layout for a much larger company that was much more in depth than my usual clients ask for. I have no idea how to charge for this. My usual price structure does not account for the amount of time I put into this project. I would like to bill design services separately.

How do you bill for design only services? Do you charge hourly, based on the project or do you have a set design price? I need to get something formal in place because I think I may be doing a lot of work for this company!:

All my pricing for that sort of thing is based on my hourly rate and how long I think it'll take. I've done so many that I can estimate pretty well how much time a graphic, layout etc are going to take me. I've pretty much lain out base prices for diffferent projects and then I add my hourly rate to those depoending on the extra work or specifics of a project. Most are pretty close though.

I tend to price by project. So right now I'm creating some special reports and charge based on the number of pages. I do this because people tend to get nervous when you give them an hourly rate. I just make sure to charge enough so that it would basically equal out to be the same thing as if I charged hourly.

I charge by the hour but don't tell a client "I'm charging you my hourly rate". Its just used when figuring out what the project price is that I quote. I decide how long it would take me, what my hourly rate is and then the total price.. thats the quote.

My husband does graphic design from home. The hardest part for him is pricing. The average hourly rate in our area is $75 but he bills a bit less than that. You can give an estimate based on how many hours you think it will take times your hourly rate. But once it goes to press you have to have them sign off that they approve and write something like " any further changes will be made at a rate of $50 an hours/ or $15 per edit."
