Gah! What would you do?

I made this hat for my newborn:

Well, it doesn't fit..... at all. The hat looks perfectly made and well-proportioned, just doesn't fit at the top due to a design flaw, I'm thinking. Too many decreases too soon, I'm thinking.

What should I do with the hat now? It's finished (minus the straps), and really does look very nice, and the Merino wool I used (same color as the picture) was expensive. If it doesn't fit my newborn, I don't see how it could fit another baby. I can't bear to just toss it.

Super cute! I would take out the top down to where you started the decreases and re-knit it using fewer decreases more slowly. Definitely salvageable.

A doll hat?

You could put a drawstring on the brim and make it into a little girl's purse if you don't want to frog.

But that is the beauty of knitting! You just rip it out (unravel) and go again. Whenever my kiddos (or I for that matter) grow out of their clothes I just unravel and reuse yarn.
Don't be reluctant to unravel something if you don't like it or it doesn't fit right. That would be a waste of that beautiful yarn.
If you are too lazy to rip out and the hat is just too shallow you can pick up stitches at the bottom (maybe in a contrast color or a novelty yarn) and then to make it look less improvised add ear flaps in the new yarn. Then when you knit those you just attach the original color and knit a thin border in that and then add your straps to the ends of the earflaps. Super cute and super warm. I never make baby hats without earflaps any more. Also makes it much more secure (in terms of little hands tugging on it) since the flaps are wide you can tie the straps very tightly since the flaps don't dig in to little cheeks and chins.
Don't be afraid to mess with your projects. Even if you don't like it, you can always just unravel and redo until you get something you're happy with.

That's what I'd do.
