Jones soda

I don't know if you remember, but a few weeks back DD was reacting pretty badly to something and I wasn't sure if it was the ghee, or the Jones soda that I was drinking (or both)...

Well, I finally got a response back from Jones, and they DO use corn-derived preservatives in their sodas. No wonder DD was reacting!

And I was so excited to find a soda that didn't have corn-syrup in it.... oh well. That's what I get for trying a packaged/processed food.

That is sooooooooooo frustrating! Why on earth do they (food industry) not have to declare corn (like soy, wheat, etc have to be declared now)???

On the plus side, does that mean ghee might be ok?

How frustrating You'd think if they knew not to use corn syrup they would avoid other corn products

I'm sure everyone in the food industry would resist that with all their might since corn or corn derivatives are in practically *everything*:

I thought about that... but I got a mystery rash soon after the incident, and I don't think I react to corn... so I think at least for me, the ghee was still bad.

And yeah- I don't understand why corn isn't in the "top" allergens that they have to declare. It seems to be a big one for a lot of us here!

I know- so annoying. I was really excited about it too when they started their big "no corn syrup" campaign... : I miss my occasional soda. :

Have you tried Blue Sky Natural Sodas with real sugar? I know they contain citric acid though... And you'd have to make sure it's the ones made with real sugar, as they do also make some with HFCS. Their caramel color is from a sugar source.

Yeah- I love their pomegranite white tea soda..... But alas, the citric acid. I haven't tried it in a while though- maybe it will be a trial for us someday.

There's another one called Hansen's or Hanson's, but I don't know much about that one at all (obviously, since I can't even remember the name).

Maine Root Sodas are corn free and DELICIOUS : I actually just got a surprise case today sent to me from my mom :

Depending on where you live you can buy them at Whole Foods. The Whole Foods here doesn't sell them so we have to order them from their website and they're expensive because of the shipping. I think they are soooo worth the price though and they say they brew them fresh with each order. So yummy. Tonight I'm gonna have my root beer with my new found coconut bliss ice cream and have my first root beer float in over 8 months. yay.

Oh and Maine Root Sodas are actually on the corn free list, which always raises my confidence in a product in terms of cornyness.

ETA: added link & let me know if you want me to read off the ingredient label from mine.

I have looked at Hanson's, but I don't think their "natural" sodas looked all that natural once I looked at the ingredient list.... I could be wrong, but I know there was some reason that I couldn't have them.

There is a root beer that I've found that was free of corn... unfortunately, I'm not a big root beer fan.

Well, at least now the people who make Jones soda are aware that there's corn in their product and that there's a market for corn-free sodas. Maybe eventually they'll develop one.

Aww too bad, that maine root stuff is incredible. They have a ginger ale although I've never tried it.

I bought the Jones soda because they were corn-free too, for DD, and she didn't react to it (the Cream soda). She usually gets eczema from corn, even touching it (like when they made cornstarch paint at preschool). I've been making my own soda for her and me though with Torani vanilla syrup and seltzer. They have a whole bunch of flavors, but a lot of them are "natural" flavors like orange, lemon, and other citrus, so I don't go there. And they do have artificial colors, but they'll tell you what all the colors are if you ask (not on their label). I had emailed them and they got back to me pretty quickly. Of course now I have one kid who can't have cane sugar, but can have corn, and the other one can have cane sugar but can't have corn. Ugh.

This (pp) was going to be my suggestion...Glad KJB92 thinks the same. In Europe, they put syrups into regular water for a flavored beverage, so they make lots of different flavored syrups. Any European store may carry some...there's fruit flavors, mint, whatever, and I have noticed they aren't using corn to sweeten as much over there. There's a Russian/ Eastern European store I have been hitting...she has juices too. Things like wild-grown berries, tart cherry, etc. , and the second ingredient isn't apple juice...as it usually is here. (We seem to react to apples

Technically, syrup isn't that hard to make either, and keeps a long time.

OMG - Shelsi- "cornyness"...you are too funny.

I don't know your history with allergies, but maybe you can have IZZE Sodas

Also, could it have been the food coloring in Jones Sodas that you and your child reacted to?

MMMMmmmm.... I love Izze's. But no, they have citric acid (corn). And it was definitely the corn in the Jones' too- DD is super sensitive to corn.

That is too bad. They don't list it as an ingredient on their website, so that is why I mentioned it. Sorry.

For us it would be the sugar plain and simple. Have you tried stevia?

I haven't. Another thing on my list of 'things to do' for a while now...

I don't eat sugar very often, but when I do I haven't noticed any changes in DD.

Why was sugar an issue for you guys? Was it a yeast issue?
I tested with yeast issues and DS was bad bacteria. He is still much improved with perfect poops but more than a little sugar he gets loose stool and gas that gets worse over the course of a few days even when it was just one time. So obviously a gut flora issue, as most digestive disorders are.
