Wool Jersey? Wool Flannel??

Alright, slightly dumb question here. *LOL* I have purchased some wool flannel and some wool Jersey. I want to use these for diaper outers or to make diaper covers. Has anyone had experience with either one? Do I need to 'felt' them? How do I do that? Do I need one layer or two to be waterproof?

Also, after felting them, if necessary, do I need to lanolize them? I apologize for all of the silly questions, I've never had experience with either one. Thanks ladies!!

You will definitely need to felt them. Wash them in hot water on the longest cycle and dry them on hot. You'll probably want to do that twice to get them felted really good. I've even read three times in some places. Twice has worked well for me. A double layer will give you the most water resistance. I do have single layer covers, but definitely for daytime use only. You will need to lanolize them before you use them. Melt about 1/4 tsp of lanolin (like Lansinoh or Purlan) in 1 cup of boiling water. I like to add a bit of Euclan to this. Put the cover in the sink and cover with warm water. Then pour the lanolin stuff over it, concentrating through the crotch area. Then let it all soak for about 15 minutes. Squeeze the water through the cover, then gently squeeze out the excess water and let dry. You might want to only put like colors together to do this because the dark colors will probably bleed for a while. If you are doing more than a couple of covers, you'll probably want to do more lanolin. That's my experience.

If you want to do single layer covers, I would felt them, because the one layer on it's own might not be enough. Otherwise, if you are doing two layer covers, I'd keep them the way they are so it's not super bulky. This is for over the diaper covers. If you are going to do wool-in-ones, then I would definitely felt, because otherwise the wool won't stand up to the washing that the diaper will need, and the first itme you wash you'll wind up with a shrunken matted mess of wool attached to your diaper, LOL.

I felt all my wool since I like ease of washing of my products lol. I wash on hot with a tad bit of detergent and rinse well (washing machine) and dry on hot, then I wash/dry 2 more times (w/o detergent-but i do add basic-h, but that's not necessary) to make sure all shrinkage is out and hopefully all bleeding of color. then I make my item then relanolize with eucalan and have never had any issues. you will loose a lot or maybe not, depends of size so be prepared, if you don't wish to risk loosing a lot then don't felt and hand wash in cold only.

Thanks ladies!! I appreciate the advice, I'll probably go ahead and felt my stuff tonight. One more questions, does felting make it thicker? I'm assuming it does,...but how much? Double? More?

Thanks!!
