RAVE: I got asked to be a bf'ing peer counselor at WIC!!!

I have been having some really bad days lately and I missed my WIC appt in the process, so I went in today w/out an appt just to pick up my checks, and they were having a bf'ing class. I had to sit in the back and wait for it to finish before they could start handing out checks. Anyway, the bf'ing consultant (who taught the class) got to talking to me, because I asked about a battery-pack pump (they don't have them ) and I was telling her about how I have nursed through mastitis from not getting enough pumping time at work/not having an electrical outlet, pumped in the bathroom, blah blah blah. On top of the fact that I'm already stretched thin because of family issues and being broke/single, I was really hoping for a battery pump free so I could cancel my rental through the hospital.

Long story short, she invited me to their world bf'ing week celebration for all the nursing moms, and asked me if I'd be willing to come back and talk at some of the bf'ing classes, about my experience as young, FT working single mom and how nursing has worked for ds and I. She also asked me if I'd like to be a peer counselor and get some training to help other young moms (esp minorities...all the bf'ing folks are white and in their mid-40's or older). I'm not really sure what's involved in the peer counselor thing, since my time is already stretched and it's obviously a volunteer thing. But that totally brightened my day. It was HUGE pat on the back for me and made me feel good about being committed to nursing...since most people my age just don't "get it."

YAY!

(What state are you in? In Illinois, our WIC BF Peer Counselors are paid, I believe it's covered by a state grant.)

I'm in VA. What all do they do? Is it a set amount of hours each week?

Yeah I was all set to do the training here as well, but I realized it would be too hard with the kids being so little. So I postponed until the kids are older.

Congrats to you!!!

I'm a breastfeeding peer counselor in Indiana and I am paid a certain amount per hour and am only able to get 15 hours a month and sometimes more depending on the funding. I love it. It is wonderful being able to help mothers with breastfeeding! Congrats!!!!

thanks! So....uh....what exactly do they do again? Is it at the actual WICV office, like just talking to moms about breastfeeding?Or goinkg to their houses? excuse the typos, ds did something to the keyboatrd (again). So random keysare stucvk together. Oh and Idon't think VA pays, she says it's a volunteer thing, but is there a way to doublecheck? WIC people have been known to give me wrong info (i.e. "wedon't give carrots & tuna" uh, yeah ya do....)

I know some peer counselors for two counties here in central IL. (Used to be three, but she left.)

Anyway, they all have regular hours at the WIC/HD office. One girl I know does 32 per week (but that's a large county and she's the only pc.) They call/are-available to talk/support the expecting mom's who have indicated an interest in bf-ing, as well as supporting new moms through bf challenges. They are usually also available via phone and make home visits (get paid mileage). The county also covers their CLC training, if they don't already have it.

That's so awesome! I work with WIC - but I'm a nutritionist (I know, one of those hated WIC people). In our county we have a lactation consultant and 2 full time breastfeeding peer counselors and one part time. All the positions are paid hourly although I'm not sure of the rates. The part time counselor does not receive benefits.

All the full time employees work 35 hours weekly and our part time works 3 1/2 days a week since she has a brand new nursing baby. I always think that our staff who have been on WIC themselves are at an advantage in terms of reaching our target population. Congrats! Can't wait to hear about your experience!

I'm a breastfeeding peer counselor for WIC too! I get paid a small hourly wage and work an average of 12 hours a week. I don't do home visits, but do visit at the hospital and see women at the clinic. Feel free to pm me if there are any specific questions I can answer.
