I was thinking about starting a little business of some sort cooking out of my home. My mom used to have a license to make cookies out of her house. She said the house had to be immaculate. She said when the inspector came he moved to stove to see if underneath was clean. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to do this or not. What is your experience with cooking out of your home?

I don't cook, personally, but I do know there is a need, especially for elderly and shut-ins. Meals on Wheels in our area never has enough volunteers and we only have one catering company that covers a huge area. The man I used to work for had to wait until 2pm sometimes to get his lunch because it was coming from so far away. It's a great idea if you can do it.

In answer to your question, I am a personal chef and I do it on the sly (I just don't bother with the legal stuff) but the way you can do it legally is to bring all your own cookware and containers to the person's house and cook in their kitchen. I'm surprised your mom was able to use her own kitchen! I thought they had to be commercial to do that, but I guess I could be wrong. Another thing you can look into is using a local church's kitchen. They have commercial kitchens, and like to make a little extra by leasing the space.

Check your state and country regulations. Better to be safe than sorry. You may need a commercial kitchen space of some sort (most homes are not approved) and perhaps licences for certain things. I had thought about making things from scratch and selling them, but it just wasnt worth it for me and I wasn't willing to risk getting caught if I didn't do it legally.
