Eating a banana an hour before breastfeeding creates 'banana-flavoured milk', according to new research.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen made the discovery after testing the impact of various flavours on the milk of breastfeeding mothers.

A report on the study published in the New Scientist says how much flavour is transferred varies between mothers.

Oh my gosh-- and for a completely different take on the study:
"Mother's Diet Taints Breast Milk"

It's amazing what a difference a headline makes

Yummy!!!

I wonder how much banana would be passed... Would the proteins change a lot?

I thought it was going to be something about adding something to pumped milk..

My youngest son is tube fed and his breastmilk has to be fortified with neocate.. Here lately they have been sending him chocolate or tropical neocate.. He cant taste it!!!

I saw a report about this on my local news!

This is what makes me wonder....

Who tasted the milk??

Chemical analysis can tell if there is any trace of what you ate in the milk, but who tasted it and said "Oh wow yes this does taste like banana!"

My mil has a tube feed and she says that she can taste the flavor of her liquid diet stuff even though it never goes in her mouth.

I think maybe they changed their headline? cause the link goes to an article that says "Mother's Diet May Flavour Breast Milk". Yay for them if they did!

I was wondering about who tasted it as well I feel bad for whoever got the garlic flavoured milk (cause you know they proabably used garlic). Ewww!! Of course, my baby likes it, so maybe it is good after all...?

Hasn't this been known for some time? We've talked about it at LLL meetings for years.

The "taint" headline was an interesting choice. "Warning: Breastfeeding may help your child be more accepting of a variety of solid foods!" What's next? "Breastmilk Deprives Some Children of Leukemia Experience"?

What do they mean by this:

Gill Rapley, a health visitor, researcher, and author, said that the findings were another reason why breastfeeding might help babies during weaning.
Oh, I got it already.

I can just imagine a bunch of scientist sitting around drinking the milk and trying to guess the flavors.

I alway joke to my little girl that she will be getting chocolate milk soon when ever I eat anything with chocolate in it.

She suggested that the same effect might be achieved by mothers using formula milk if they changed the brand now and again.
Pfft. Yeah right. I'm sure that would have the same effect.

I agree with the PP who asked "Haven't we known this for some time?"

I have a formula and a breast kid. The breastfed child eats tomatoes like they're candy, prefers veggies over fruits and veggies over sweets and candy.

The formula fed kid hardly ate a veggie growing up, and still doesn't have many that she likes.

I've often wondered if the exposure to different flavors via breastmilk in the breastfed (9 months exclusive and continued to be an avid nurser until she was 3, weaning at 37 months) child resulted in her love of all foods. As opposed to the formula fed child who was on soy formula until she was 3 due to dairy allergy, who wasn't exposed to various flavors like her sister was and who has many flavor issues with food.

Woohoo, another Study Says Sun Is Warm! article.

OK, the timeline on when flavors peak, and that it's different for every woman, is pretty interesting to have numbers on. But still. Anyone else sitting here thinking "Well... duh!"?
