gut healing?

hey guys.... my DS is allergic to almost all forms of proteins... i have gained all the knowledge i have about allergies from this website thanks to all of u! my sons allergist and pediatrician just advise me to play the waiting game. i.e. wait till he outgrows his allergies. but folks here seem to know and talk a lot about gut healing. how do i go about it? is it a DIY thing? do i need to seek professional help. i have tried NAET -to no avail. he is on homeopathy meds currently which seems to have increased his intervals between steroid applications for his eczema. but still reacts violently to any allergen. he is off the charts for height and weight gain (on the lower side i mean). the doc says its natural as he is deprived of nutrition. but i m not satisfied with his answers. do i need a naturopath? a dietician? what kind of a professioanl? please help....

Wow, it sounds like you have a lot going on. I am not sure I can help, but wanted to offer you some hugs. I will say that I have found I have to be the proactive one in helping my kids. The conventional doctors are not concerned with health, just keeping sickness at bay. If your instinct is telling you to be more proactive, then seek out more help. You say he's on homeopathic remedies, do you have a homeopath? I would try to seek out a homepathic MD if you can find one. That way you have both sides.

How old is your son and exactly what is he allergic to? Does he still breastfeed? Any solids?

I would read the healing the gut sticky and start doing some things there, like probiotics, elimination diets for you both, etc.

My first son developed diarrhea at 9 months and stopped gaining weight, and the doctor kept telling me it was fine, he was not off the charts. Well, I wasn't about to sit around and wait for him to lose weight to a dangerous level. I knew there was something wrong. I could not accept that answer, and I sought out other answers. Once we identified his intestinal problems and began healing his gut, the diarrhea stopped and he began to gain weight again.

Good luck! Remember you are the mom and trust your instincts. If something is telling you to look harder, then do.

Are you bfing? How old is your ds? How long have you noticed reactions? When you say, "all forms of protein," are you talking about all meats? Can you post what he has reacted to? What kind of reactions does he have?

Assuming you're bfing, if he's reacting to foods in your diet through your milk, you have leaky gut, too, and you would need to work on healing both of you at the same time.

For gut healing, we use probiotics, cod liver oil, l-glutamine, vitamin C w/ quercetin, biotin, and digestive enzymes. Some things might not be appropriate for a baby to take, but I took all of it while I was nursing and gave my toddler probiotics and clo. Now that she's starting to swallow caps on her own, I'm giving her enzymes, though I need to be much more consistent. I can elaborate on all that if you want.

As far as using a naturopath, it depends on the doctor, but from what I've gathered here, they aren't always that helpful or knowledgeable in this area. I think Wugmama has had the best experience. Here's her most recent post, and it also includes what she's doing for gut-healing, so it should useful, too.http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=936663

ETA: my dd was also very small and had chronic diarrhea and eczema. When we eliminated her allergens, her skin healed, and her diarrhea went away. Getting the allergens out is key, because they damage the gut, and then, after that, it's important to give it time to heal. My dd finally started putting on weight and now she's completely healthy.

Twinlabs l-glutamine and Nature's Bounty Biotin (there might be a better brand of biotin; that one I just got at my grocery store, but it didn't have any bad-for-us ingredients).

: We started on all those supplements (except the biotin, what is it and what does it do?) about a month ago and dd is now growing! It's amazing. Dd takes probiotics, CLO, and has bone broth every day.

We went to a highly recommended naturopath and she was no help at all. When I mentioned dd has a lot of allergies she asked me what they were and then said, "oh, that's not that many." Um, ok, so it's not 20 things but they are allergens that are in EVERYTHING. Then for her to gain weight she actually suggested giving my dd nut butters : Holy cow, my dd has been shown to be allergic to most of the top 8, I am not giving her peanuts/nuts for a very very long time. Oh and she told me I should give her more solids and breast feed less

On the Vitamin C note... I think it was doing a lot of good for me, until I realized that DD was reacting to it. Is there a Vit C that isn't made from corn?

Twinlabs vitamin C + Quercetin is corn-free.

Sweet- thanks. I take their Calcium Citrate, so I will have to see if they have their Vitamin C at my local HFS too!

Do you by chance know what it's made out of (if not corn)? My Vit C is corn-derived, but 100% guaranteed to be corn(protein)-free... and DD reacted to it.

Sago palm

Twinlabs also has "Allergy C" which is derived from sago palm -- no corn. That's what I use.

I would urge caution with the NOW brand products. I react to many of their supplements that claim to be corn free. Frankly, I no longer trust their "no corn" claims.

On the Tru-C, I wouldn't take it without calling them directly and asking them to verify exactly what the Cellulose, Magnesium Stearate, and Stearic Acid are derived from --these are often derived from corn.

That is so annoying. : I am really tired of trying to find all the hidden corn everywhere!!!

I got the TwinLabs Allergy-C caps, so hopefully those will work out.... (keeping fingers crossed)
