Soy trial - help me figure out the results?

We're trialing soy today. It was one of the 1st things I eliminated from my diet months ago but I don't know if Ellie is sensitive or not. She's been doing pretty well for awhile (close to 2 weeks) so I thought we had eliminated everything and she was ready for a reintroduction.

So last night her poop was pretty much normal but I did notice a trace of mucous and a little looser quality - nothing really too concerning. This morning pretty much the same - I thought the mucous could still be her system healing or else some very mild reaction that I could figure out later. I'm sure I haven't had an exposure to the top 8 + oats in the past few days - she usually reacts within 6-12 hrs.

So I ate a big plate of Tofu Scramble at 11:30 today. I nursed her at 12:15. At 12:45 major mucous in the diaper. Is this a reaction to the soy or something else entirely? Is it possible the soy got in to my milk that quickly? It seems too fast.

I doubt the soy from the tofu scramble had gotten there by 12:15, but the mucus could have been a cumulative effect of the other times you ingested soy. If it's soy, my guess is that you'll see a lot more yuckiness in a few hours, as a result of the bigger soy meal. Hopefully, whatever happens will give a clear indication one way or the other.

I didn't think the reaction would come that quickly. But if it isn't in reaction to the tofu scramble then it must be something that we haven't identified as a problem before. The tofu scramble was my 1st soy exposure in many weeks.

hmm.

We're in full fledged frequent mucousy poops now. Expecting blood any minute.

Guess I'll stop the soy trial, wait for the reaction to clear, and try again.

Oops, sorry. I read that as you'd started the soy trial, but then had a big plate of tofu scramble. I was thinking you'd had smaller amounts before then.

Well, that stinks. Maybe it's a virus? Though the blood is concerning.

I don't think a virus. She's not acting sick and this is her typical reaction to her trigger foods.

I was completely expecting this reaction, just not quite so quickly.

Well, thanks for the help. It was our first trial. Up until now we've just been taking foods away. We finally got to a point where I thought we could try to add something back in. Oh well... Maybe next time.

Hmm. Maybe next time hold off on a food trial if there's any trace of mucus or ANYTHING "out of the ordinary" so you don't have a potential virus messing up results.

M used to react fast to soy in my diet.

I ate some popcorn popped in soy oil at the fair one afternoon and he was having mucus-y diarrhea within the hour. No soy protein, just oil.

Yeah, I second that. If she was having even a little mucous in her stool then she was not at baseline most likely.

I'm thinking now the reaction today was to soy after all. She's starting to get better so it seems like it was a really quick thing. There is really nothing I ate yesterday that I would think could be a problem. However, there are a few foods I have had in the past several days that I've wondered about before (like strawberries and peas). Neither seems to elicit a strong response but I'm a bit suspicious so they could explain the trace amt of mucous.

I know I shouldn't have done a trial today after her stools last night and this morning. DH convinced me I was over analyzing it, and I was happy to be convinced because I didn't want to put it off for a whole week (Friday is really the best day for a trial b/c we have 3 days in a row that she won't get pumped milk from another day). Note to self - next time more self control.

So I guess we'll try soy again still to confirm but I'm pretty sure I should add it to the list with dairy, oats, and eggs.

Looking ahead to future trials - would you just go ahead and avoid nuts and not bother to trial it if you were me? I'm scared of nut allergies and thinking whether or not she's allergic to them now I don't want to create an allergy by exposing her. What do you all think?

That's what I'm doing. Dd's never had nuts or shellfish and I don't plan to introduce them until she's older.

I agree. With atopic kids, I think the longer you wait, the better.

Quick update - I re-tried soy today after completely normal poops yesterday and this morning. I drank a smoothie with soy protein at 1:30. Green mucousy diarrhea with spots of blood at 6. So soy is definitely out, and I'm pretty sure the reaction Friday even though it was so quick was to soy too.

Well, that sucks, but at least you know. Are you guys dairy-free, too?

Yup. Dairy, soy, wheat/ gluten, egg, oat, coffee/tea, fish, and nut free here. We are pretty sure about the dairy, oat, egg, and soy but don't know about the others.
