If I used my kids old fleece blankets...

O.K. we have a bunch of fleece blankets around here-The ones with the edges cut into a fringe...I have no idea what kind of fleece they are,but I'm wondering if I use them to make covers would they just leak?Would they work in just normal diapers? Are they absorbant at all?I have not experimented with water yet,I want to know your thoughts, experiences or suggestions.TIA.

Polyester fleece is not absorbent at all. You can only use it for making covers. I made a cover out of some totally crappy fleece, which amazingly works pretty well. It's 4 layers thick in the wetzone: 2 body layers and 2 'soaker' layers. Here's a pic. It's sewn just like a fitted diaper. You could also sew little pull-on fleece shorts/pants for covers. Just do at least 3-4 layers (depending how thick the fabric is) and it should work. Good luck!

So does any moisture sneak thru the 4 layers? This is a major worry I have...
If not, I'm in heaven!Yay!such good news!

I don't think any wetness has made it through the 4 layers...it isn't even damp after a super-soaker pee.

Polyester fleece is basically made with 'plastic' threads (that's how they recycle plastic bottles into fleece sweaters), so the fabric will not absorb any wetness. But, the fleece is breathable ('holes' where the fabric is woven/knit together), which is great for your kid's skin, but can lead to wicking if you only have 1 or two layers. But once you get 3-4 layers, there's not really a chance for the wet cotton diaper to wick to cotton clothes with all that fleece in between! The only problem I've had with the cover I made is the size/shape I sewed it...it barely covers the diaper, so sometimes a little edge peeks out and then we have damp jammies/sheets. Next time I'm trying little shorts-style covers.

You're welcome! I'm glad I could help.

A good way to try the shorts would be two layers for the whole garment, plus two extra hourglass-shaped pieces in the crotch area (make one of the hourglass shapes slightly larger than the other to reduce bulk).

Here are some nice ones that Halfasianmomma has over in the recycled materials thread:
