Hives From A Popsicle?

A few weeks ago we went through a period where my just about 3 yr old suddenly went through a period of getting hives. The only thing we could think of was possibly tomatoes. But then we never saw a reaction again. This afternoon he had a popsicle and got two tiny hives on his face. Lunch had been 3 hours previous and he had not had anything else to eat. Now I am making the connection - the last time we had popsicles was when he had all the hives. What in these ingredients could possibly be causing the hives?

Popsicle brand fruit juice twisters. He had a cherry one. Water, pear juice from concentrate (10%), sugar, corn syrup, HF corn syrup, natural & artificial flavors, citric acid, malic acid, guar gum, locust bean gum, red 40, yellow 5, blue 1, ascorbic acid.

We do have benedryl & epi pen on hand for older DS's dairy allergy.

It could be the corn syrup, artificial flavors or artificial colors. Many of those "mystery ingredients" like citric acid etc. could also be corn derived.

My guess would be the corn ingredients- reactions to artificial colors and flavors tend to be behavioral rather than things like hives.

Corn is a definite possibility, since those seem to be packed with it- corn syrup, HF corn syrup, natural flavors (possibly corn-derived), citric acid, ascorbic acid....

Or, it could be a legume (or soy) allergy from the guar gum or locust bean gum.

I would definitely get some allergy testing done. Hives are a pretty serious reaction.

I would suspect the corn or the artificial ingredients, particularly the color. My sister was VERY allergic to Red #40 as a kid and Yellow #5. Pear juice is another possibility.

We've had to give up store bought popsicles because of the dyes.

My thought was the dyes as well. DS get shives whenever he has anythgin with dye. Popsicle brand makes all natural colors and flavors pops in regualr grocery stores if you are shopping there fo rpopsicles. The rest of tehingedients aren't stellar and may still cause hives if it is nto dye related. Edy's i believe makes an all natural able to pronounce very few ingredients pops as well... migh tnot be them but i think it was. Otherwise we buy them at the HFS. they even have those flavorice type ones there.. (you know the juice in a tube tha tyou freze) they are just grape and cherry juice in plastic tube......

One of my nut-allergic students cannot eat certain brands of popsicles because they are manufactured along with ice cream products that contain nuts...so it could be an ingredient other than the popsicle ingredients but present at the factory at which they are manufactured. Just a thought.
