This month's Babytalk

The main feature of the issue is nursing, and there's an article on cross-nursing that's generally positive and includes an endorsement from Dr. Sears. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least.

Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

Did they make sure not to have a baby latched onto a breast for the front cover? Last time they did that lots of people freaked.

There was some good info, but there were also things in it that made me . I dont have it in front of me...I may have thrown it out lol

I just got it a few days ago and have it in front of me right now.
pg21- Bottles up. Says that it's OK to gve a bottle to a babe just released from the hospital with NO ill effects on the babe's latch or your milk supply!
What I liked:
pg 11- What nobody told me about breastfeeding: Every few hrs I'd be allowed to sit and put my feet up and relax for 30 min.

Sometimes those magazines make me mad! At least they are slowly including such things as BF'ing and CD.

Especially when some mom will see it and think "Oh ok I can give them a bottle" and the problems start! Granted some babies don't have a confusion issue, but with working parts (i.e. Breasts!) why would you bother?

There are lots of reasons. Dad or grandma decides to be "helpful" and let the new mom sleep a longer stretch at night. Mom is uncomfortable NIP (or in front of guests) so gives the babe a bottle. Mom wants to let dad/grandparent/older sib feed the baby "so they can bond."

Yes, plenty of babies have absolutely no trouble switching back and forth from bottle to breast. For moms with a healthy supply (or oversupply) missing a feeding won't negatively impact milk supply- and in any case, for families planning on continuing with a bottle of formula a day, resultant decrease in milk supply may not be seen as a problem anyway.

But parents should still be given accurate information, and know that introducing bottles and/or formula in the early days CAN cause problems- not that it always does, but it can. Then moms can make informed decisions.

I may not agree with all those reasons as being a good reason, but I totally see your point and agree that it's the misleading information thats the problem.

Yes this! I have to work only weekends as an RN so my babies got bottles only then (two a day) and they had no problems switching back and forth, but I KNEW that it could cause potential problems because my OB/GYN informed me it was ok to do it, but he told me of the risks and signs to watch for. Mamas just need to be informed. Ya know, I have never ever Baby Talk, and it sounds like I probably don't want to bother.
