Sigg bottles for kids?

Hope this is in the right place.

Do you have Sigg bottles for your kids? Both my children need water/drinking bottles. But these are so expensive (this would be a big purchase for us) and they could lose them.

So what do you think, bite the bullet and buy them or they're a lot of hype and something much cheaper will be just as good for my kids, the enviroment etc...

Oh and if you know of something that is just as safe and cheaper would mind sharing?

Thanks.

we have them and love them and they will last forever. well worth the $ IMO.

Because of the expense...we've actually been less likely to lose them! In other words, I double check to make sure I've remembered them or even once drove back to the park to retrieve it. However, my kids aren't school age yet so I suppose its possible they could lose them. I think I paid around $16 for each one somewhere online (can't remember where). IMO they've been worth it. We still have them a year later. My plastic ones broke so even tho they were cheap, I was always replacing.

I think Klean Kanteens are cheaper (just plain silver) and work just as well.

I got one for ds and he loves it and they make good grandparent presents....try to find them on ebay maybe?
They are a little hard for some 3-4 year olds to open and close. We're happy with them. I find I just do a good job of keeping track of it since ds just has one. I got a couple of extra lids when I ordered his new one after his old one sprang a leak (after 3 years of constant use). We have a neoprene sleeve that keeps the water cool which will probably add to the longevity of the new one. They do dent easily if they get tossed around.

I am not a fan of Sigg, I think it's a lot of hype. For me the issue is insulation. They have none. So if you have cold water on a hot day, it quickly becomes warm water. Yuck. Leaving it in the car is worse.

We use Thermos brand bottles. Foogo is their kids line, but there are lots of choices. Same idea, but insulated walls mean you can have cold water and leave it all day in a HOT car, and at the end of the day you STILL have ice COLD water!

These are interesting, are the tops hard to clean and do you happen to know if they are safe?
(No leeking chemicals into the water)

Off to see what I can find...

I should add that my oldest is 7 so he will be taking it to school.

We have a Sigg and Klean Kanteens and reach for the Klean Kanteens more. The Sigg gets dents easier. For some reason the smell from the Sigg bothers me, guess I am just a little sensitive to it .

I agree that the siggs have no insulation.. we have a couple of siggs and a couple of kleen kanteens... I usually put one of those beer holder things on them to help keep them cold a bit longer.. but it doesn't help much.

I also don't like the siggs because of the small opening. The kleen kanteens can fit ice cubes.

FYI. camelbak makes BPA-free bottles now that retail for about 10-12 bucks... i like them because they have a straw with the camelbak mouth-piece.

I use Kleen Kanteens for my entire family. One for each boy (they take theirs in their lunchboxes to school), one for dd, for dh, and two for me

I know someone who has made stickon labels for hers with her phone in case they get lost. We're careful with ours, and it's never been an issue.

I really like the sports tops for them, and will order them for the boys before school starts. And yes, they dent, but it adds to their character!

I bought Siggs for each member of our family a few months ago. Just bit the bullet and paid $132 altogether.... (couple of them didn't come with the kind of tops I wanted, and I got cleaning tablets).

I like that we aren't buying/using single-use bottled water much anymore.

I like that we can easily tell whose is whose (I purposefully got all five different).

I think they are safer than drinking from plastic.

I like that we have more space in the glasses cabinet - as we had DOZENS of the plastic, everyone gives them away as advertising types, and now just have our Siggs (and to be honest, a few plastic ones just in case someone forgets a Sigg at work or whatever).

My kids (12, 7 and 5) all LOVE them, but my 12 year old particularly loves hers. She has more than once asked for a second one as a gift sometime.

My only complaint is that they aren't supposed to go in the dishwasher. But we really only use ours for water, so they aren't that hard to get clean.

A friend swears by Kleen Kanteens, but I'm not sure what the difference is. She is quite convinced that all other brands aren't safe.

Kleen Kanteens are pure stainless steel, no liner. Siggs have a "secret" inert liner that they claim is baked on and totally safe. Europeans accept it as safe, and they generally have more strict safety regulations that we do.

I have Siggs, the main reason so we could tell them apart.

I have a couple Siggs for DD and she can't manage the tops yet, plus they aren't insulated at all. We are sticking w/ the Thermos Funtainers, they are VERY easy to clean, virtually leak-free, the tops and straws are non-leaching and you can keep drinks cold for about 12 hours!! I wish they'd make them in bigger sizes for grownups!!
We all have them and love them.

We mix up our lemon and water everyday, and off we go!

We do have one Sigg, and the reason I like Kleen Kanteens better is because the top is much wider, making it easier to clean and put icecubes in.

I looked into Siggs and didn't get them because:

--the top is very narrow, making cleaning difficult
--they are not recommended to go in the dishwasher
--they are made of aluminum, and although the inside is coated, I worry that the coating could eventually wear off (they say on the packaging to be careful not to use to abrasive of a brush because you might scrape the coating off), and aluminum isn't a material I'm comfortable letting my kids drink from
--they aren't insulated, so drinks won't stay cold
--the top is too difficult for my 3yo to open and close by himself

That's a *lot* of drawbacks for a $15 cup, IMO. We went with the Thermos Foogo straw cups and love them.

Yeah...I'm lukewarm on the siggs, mostly for the functional reasons. I also find them hard to clean, small openings, and fidgety/tough for my 2.5 yr old to handle. Also, can't use 'em in the dishwasher The lack of insulation is a pain although I like the cooler slip idea.

Might have to look into the Thermos ones - hadn't heard of those.

I love our Siggs. We have the insulating sleeves to put them in and they keep water cold all day long, even on hot days. I like that you can wash the sleeves separately.

A bottle brush works great to clean them. Even if the exterior paint chips off, the inside is coated with a water-based resin. I like the thought that water is next to my water rather than metal (which is why I don't like the KK).

The care instructions say they are dishwasher safe, too.

I like that they are manufactured in Germany and Switzerland where the people who are making them are actually able to support a family on their pay rather than in China (KK and Foogo). Made in China is kind of the absolute deal breaker for me.

Oh! what kind of slleeves do you put on? The ones I use only keep them cooler a bit longer... to have one that keeps it cold all day would be great!
