recycle broken shoes?

I have quite a few old shoes that have broken and I have not thrown away. I was wondering if anyone had some genious ideas on how to recycle or something other than just throw away.
I have thought of a couple ideas....
-send them to the humaine society for them to give to dogs to chew on. But one I do not know that they do that type of thing and two most of these are not really chew friendly (most are dress shoes).

-put plaster on them and paint (or just paint them) and use as crazy art....maybe to decorate a dressing area. Only problem....I do not have said "dressing area"....only a closet which I share with my hubby and I do not think he would be cool with decorating it with broken shoes...lol.

Some of them I repaired as much as possible until they kept breaking and got on my nerves.

Any ideas?

I think there may be some recycling programs through athletic shoe companies where you can return running shoes (Nike?) but I've never done that myself.

My aunt turns old shoes into planters outside - just fills them with soil & plants flowers - kinda unique.

Some of our local clothing drives advertise that they take old shoes in any condition as they do recycle the unwearable pairs. (for what or into what, I don't know) Might be worth looking into in your area.

My dc's school recycles old shoes (and everything else!). Maybe check out your local schools.
