Amount of expressed milk

Hi all. I am back to work full time and I and concerned with the amount of milk I am able (or unable) to express. I use a PIS and I am only able to get 2-3 ozs of milk at each pumping. My DD is taking 5-6 ozs per bottle...so you can see my concern. I just started work today and I do have a supply of frozen milk but why am I not able to get more milk.

Hi Heather,

How many times a day can you pump at work? And how many bottles does your DS take? Are you pumping on both sides?

When I was pumping I found I could get more milk early in the week, because of nursing a lot over the weekend. If that is true for you then take advantage of those heavier milk supply days to make up for the lighter days at the end of the week. On the lighter days, if I kept switching back and forth from side to side I was able to get more overall.

If neither of these suggestions work for you, you might want to try some Mother's Milk Tea to increase your supply and/or try a different pump. Maybe the PIS just doens't work well for you. I had good luck with the Avent Isis.

Best of luck to you!

I've been back at work for six months, five months full time. We exclusively breast fed (or breastmilk fed) until the 6 month mark, and my baby still gets most of his calories from me, not from solids. It is really hard to get a lot of milk when you pump if you work full time. Here is what I have been doing:

*I pump four times a day--three times double pumping at work, and once early in the morning I pump one breast. Someone here told me that she fed with only one breast all night and then pumped the full one in the morning, and that's what I do. When I first went back to work I was only pumping twice a day, but once I was back full time that was not enough. So I do one session during lunch.

*I do that early morning pumping session even on days off.

*I take dried herbs in capsules: fenugreek, blessed thistle and nettles. Apparently the nettles have worked to keep the milk from getting all watery from taking fenugreek. YMMV. Check the Kellymom pages on herbs and lactation for more information.Everyone has different reactions with the galactalogue (milk stimulating) herbs and some find fenugreek too strong.

*I eat oatmeal every morning before work.

*I drink extra water and at least one cup of Mothers Milk tea (on top of the other herbs!) Sometimes I use the Traditional Medicinals and sometimes the one from Aveda--different herbs but both seem to help. Any hot drink is helpful though, as long as it's NOT mint tea!

*I try to get as much sleep as I can, because it affects the amount you can pump

*I sleep with the baby and let him nurse a lot at night.

My workplace is very family-friendly and I have an office door that closes. That helps.

This is my first day back. I will be pumping three times while at work. I am double pumping. I co-sleep with my DD and nurse her to sleep each night she will wake once in the middle of the night and nurse for about 5 min. then fall asleep again. I intend to pump at least once in the middle of the night to ensure I get enough milk for her during the day. I have started drinking the Mothers Milk tea and I drink plenty of water. Is there something I need to do because I am drinking the mothers milk tea as mentioned above?

Hi Heather,

That sounds completely normal to me! I doublepump 2x a day at work and get about 3 oz. each time & I go to daycare & nurse her at lunch. I also doublepump at home about 10 PM (after DD is asleep) and at about 5 AM. At 10 PM - I get 3 oz. at 5 AM I get about 8 oz. It has been enough to get DD thru the day with fresh milk, but... I am starting to dip into my frozen supply the past month or so. DD is now 6 months old & I had to start back to work when she was 12 weeks. I do take Fenugreek, but not all the time, just when supply seems to start taking a dip & then for about 2 weeks to build it back up (a bit concerned about the peanut allergy connection, but obviously not THAT concerned!). The GNC brand seems to work best for me. I HATE the MM Tea, but I don't like licorice either! I imagine that soon daycare will have to supplement a little bit with formula (YUK), but I just can't fit in any more pumping sessions these days.

Make sure you are completely comfortable where/when you pump-you might just need some time to get used to it. Sometimes I get some "pump resistance" when there's too much stress at work. Also, be sure you are using a good quality double pump-the pump itself can make a difference.

Also, join "pumpmoms" on Yahoo Groups - they have TONS of resources there!! It's a great bunch!

I'm pumping again so I'm checking this thread!

No, you do not have to take anything to balance the galactalogues in Mother's Milk tea. It's a mild way to get them. The strongest way is tincture, then dried herbs in capsule, then tea. You can also drink beer in the evening (didn't do anything for me, but some swear by it) eat dandelion greens (you can get them at Whole Foods) and eat other greens, lettuces, etc.

Another thing that helps me get more milk is to bring dishtowels to work to roll up to use to support my breasts. I am also using those yellow plastic bottle holders to hold the bottles in my lap so I can jam them between my boobs and the desk and have hands free to type.

Don't take your yields on the first days of work to be indicative of what you are going to get once you are used to this. You will see fluctuations. Until recently I had like two feedings my freezer stash, it was scary. Now I'm ahead by quite a few feedings.

I know it's hard to be relaxed about this. You can do it. Stay cool!

I have had to increase my milk while my ds was on a feed tube (not at the breast at all) and found Mothers Milk Tea worked well. Many of the other things mention also help me. Keep it up. Its worth the effort.

AGGHHH...you don't need to use towels!! If you are using a nursing bra that hooks on top just loop a rubberband around the neck of each horn and the other end around the hook of your nursing bra. You need to hold both horns up until you turn on the pump, then the suction and the rubberbands will keep them in place (unless you knock into them).

I pumped for dd (now 2+yo) from 3mo to 1yr. I was a VERY low volume pumper. I pumped 3-5x at work (every 2-3hrs) as well as an early morning session and one before I went to sleep. Sometimes I would get as little as 1-2oz total in a session....but I averaged about 3-4oz.

I ate oatmeal, drank water, tried to get more sleep, drank MM tea, coslept w/ dd...everything I could think of. It was a struggle but we made it through...and didn't have to supplement.

HTH
