But she said that tricare wont cover it!!! So Im going to have a chat with my hubby about just paying it ourselves and going for it. But I just wanted to know what steps can I take with trying to get tricare to cover it. I thought I read that they do pay for homebirths with tricare remote but I guess I was wrong.

I just got tricare to cover my homebirth 100%! At first they didnt want to pay and denied the claim so I called tricare myself and explained what I wanted and asked what I needed to do to make that happen and they told me id have to see my PCM and get a referral to see an out of network provider for the homebirth...so thats what I did! Just a few days later the midwives office called me to let me know they called tricare and they are now going to pay 100%! It really was pretty easy and painless...so you should try and see if they will do the same for you!

Called tricare and they said they would cover with a referal so now how do I go about getting my dr. to sign a referal? I have no idea how they feel about homebirths!

Is the "someone" a CNM? Tricare does not extend authorized status to midwives who are not CNMs.

I was nervous about seeing a doctor that was totally agains the idea of a homebirth and not wanting to sign a referral...and that is always a possibility, there is no way to tell unless you know the doc your going to see well. I had never seen the doctor that wrote my referral, I just made the appointment and told them the reason was to get a referral...I went in, they did vitals like a normal appointment and the doc did a quick exam with lung and heart tones, ears, nose and throat and then just asked me what I needed the referral for...so I told her (boy was I nervous) and she was TOTALLY OK with it, even wrote the referral beautifully saying I had done lots of independant research and felt this was the best options for mine and my babys well being.

She then put one copy in the system through to tricare, and gave me 2 one for me to keep and one to give to my midwives office to have on file.
The midwives office called tricare back a day or so later and asked again for approval for payment of the birth expenses and they said yes!

I dont know if it will be so easy for you and like another poster said, it seems they wont pay for CPM's at all so make sure your midwife is a CNM....mine is a CNM but seems more natural mined than some CPM's ive seem, I feel very blessed!
