Making Wooden Toys

I would like to make a wooden teether for my DS and I read up somewhere that no all wood is safe to use. I see a lot of toys are made out of 'hard maple'.. so im assuming that it is safe. I am not getting any answers when i do a search on google, so maybe someone here can help me out.
what kind of wood can i use to creat absolutely safe teething toys?
thanks

I have seen cherry used in Waldorfy style rattles. Haba teethers are usually beech wood I believe. I haven't made any, but maple, beech, and cherry are the ones that pop in my head. I guess you'd want to avoid anything that had the potential to splinter easily.

Here's a start.

Search "food safe" wood, or "food grade." Anything that a chopping block or rolling pin can be made of will be useful.

Also be careful of 1. what the wood is treated with, and 2. what you finish the wood with.
