NPR story that jusy aired re: circumcision

Here is a link to "The World" program on NPR radio. I just heard this story and it really caught my attention since I just completed reading this month's circumcision article. The story eans a bit toward circumcision but does offer the intact side of the story. I am so happy my 3 year old is intact! And, if the little one I am carrying now (21 weeks preg.) is a boy, he too will be "whole" like his big brother.

The surgery's free. It's paid for by the US government, under President Bush's program for AIDS treatment and prevention. The men also receive about $3 to compensate them for losing a day or two of work.

I'm so angry right now I can't speak.

Don't you love how our tax money is being channeled towards useless, highly questionable programs instead of tested out and successful treatment options. The good news is that the whole circumcision thing in Africa has caused much skepticism across that continent. I think some group in Kenya just rejected the plan, and few governments seem to be willing to endorse it. So in the long run, this won't go anywhere.

Wow. $3 for a day or TWO?

Did anyone listen to the circumcision song?

UGH. I was in the car yesterday when this came on the radio. I could not believe it. I find it incredibly sad.

Oh that's awful. I was really hoping the 'circing prevents HIV' resurfacing would get shot down right away. This was tried this during WWII to prevent STD's also... of course it works- for about 6 weeks while your penis heals!

It's sad to look at the grown men lining up for this needless surgery.

THe "Circumcision SOng"? Wow, jus wow. Pretty sick. They only show those guys pre-Op, no Post-Op, but that wouldn't make very nice pics, because those would be preeeeetty uncomfy looking.

Here is a good (sane) opinion piece from Uganda:

The other face of circumcision in HIV war

Quote:
Reputable senior research fellows, Garry Dowsett and Murray Coach, from Australia suggest in their findings; “The use of male circumcision in preventing HIV infection” that the results of the three RCTs contain exaggerated claims. In his work; “The Demonisation of the Foreskin and the Rise of Circumcision in Britain,” Darby RJL, too, brings to the fore what he considers information that the respective supervisors of the three RCTs should not have ignored.

Apparently it turns out that all the three RCTs were terminated early, arguably before the incidence of HIV infection in the circumcised males caught up with the incidence of infection in the non-circumcised males.

It is therefore highly probable that non-circumcised males got infected more quickly than their circumcised friends because the circumcised males required a period of abstinence after circumcision, suggesting, among other things, likely that if the studies had continued as initially scheduled, the difference in infection incidence between the two groups of males would have been small.

Please make SURE they receive a letter about the horrible mass circumcision campaigns:
