My Mother Blessing is Tonight!

A couple friends are putting together a blessingway for me tonight, and I am so very excited. I know the big elements, but they are keeping most of it a secret. I have one friend who is my spiritual, natural living, everything green mentor, and she is spearheading the planning. She dropped off a pre-blessingway gift on Monday. It was a beautiful gift packet of birth affirmation cards, bath salts, and pregnancy tea. There were instructions on relaxing in the tub while drinking the tea and reading the affirmations. I did that last night, and I slept better than I have in WEEKS!

Wow. I can't even explain how wonderful it was. There were four of them that put the event together without me knowing most of it. They held it at my in-laws cabin on a wooded lot on a lake. When I arrived, they had created with some willow branches that fell in a recent storm an elaborate archway going to the entrance. It was almost dusk, and they lit it with several strands of white lights.

I was greeted at the door by my wonderful friends. The entrance (typically a toy and shoe deposit area for my boys) they transformed into a tranquil space with a rose bath. Before entering the house, we each rinsed our hands in the rose water to wash away anxieties, fears and negative thoughts in order to clear room for a positive experience.

After walking through a few doorways of sheer drapes they hung, you came into the living room that was transformed into an amazing sanctuary of peace, with each corner of the room representing a different earth direction and element. The decorations were amazing with candles, nature elements, a waterfall, and the music was perfect.

The ceremony started by the head hostess seating me on a special seat and presenting me with a flowered crown a few of their daugthers made from flowers they found on the property. She also presented each of the guests with a smaller crown to celebrate them as powerful women, too. We then called ourselves present by lighting a candle and stating our name, the names of the children we are mothers to, and the names of the women we are daughters to going back as many generations we could remember (this is a symbolic reminder that we are all a part of a lineage of strong, wonderful women).

We then acknowledged the earth elements and directions by each reading a prewritten passage, which grounded us. Then, the head hostess guided us through a meditation and read a few passages and affirmations to remind us that pregnancy, birthing, and motherhood are all blessed, beautiful and organic processes.

They then gave me a foot and hand bath and massage as they presented me with traditional Navajo blessingway blessings. Then, they each presented me with a birth bead and personal blessing based on a positive birth or mothering experience. They each also gave me a small gift at that time. Let me tell you, I haven't laughed our cried that much in a very long time!

We then closed the circle by stretching out a piece of ribbon and each of us holding onto a section. The head hostess recited a passage about the strength of womanhood and women's circles, and we each cut the ribbon and tied our piece around our wrists. They intend on wearing them as a constant reminder to keep me in their thoughts until I deliver (but, most of them fell off already because the ribbon was so slippery!).

Then, we walked together up the hill for food and a bonfire. The girls had built what could only be called a harem! They had wonderful fruit and chocolate and they turned a gazebo into a tranquil space with sheer drapes, white lights and flowers. It was a beautiful clear night and we could see stars forever. We stayed out until very late talking.

I left there feeling so empowered to have the birth experience that I desire. It was an amazing experience. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to have such an amazing group of women who support me and love me unconditionally!
