I'm afraid so. Antiperspirants contain aluminum derivatives which are very unhealthy, as they are absorbed into the body where they can do much damage. A healthier alternative is a natural deodorant, as these simply work to eliminate the smell while allowing the skin to sweat naturally.

I made myself a compromise. I'm not a big sweater or stinker, and *most* of the time I'm just at home or doing casual things., plus I live in the Northwest where it doesn't really get super hot. So what I do is on a day to day basis I use the Weleda spray deodorant (or nothing if I'm truly just at home), but I do keep around my trusty secret for times when I want to be SURE I will not be stinky or sweaty, like if I'm going out somewhere important, or doing a heavy duty activity where I will be around people and don't want to feel self concious. That way, I only use the secret rarely/occassionally and therefore feel like I'm less exposed to the bad stuff.

I have tried so many of the deodorants from the health store and none of them work on me. I am always stinky when I use them!
I'm back to my trusty Dove/Secret but I'm not happy about it.

I thought it would be impossible to make the switch, but after about two weeks, your body adjusts....and I sweat WAY less now! I spritz with alcohol in the am, then I use Jason's Tea tree & melaleuca (?) deoderant.
Last weekend we went camping & I forgot my natural deoderant. I had Secret in my bag-I sweat so badly the entire time! I couldn't wait to get back to my good stuff.
p.s. I'm a very, very sweaty person.

I always found that using conventional aluminum deodorant gave me pitter stains on my clothes. I also use to get really irritated cyst type things under my arms when I used aluminum deodorant - both problems gone.
Sometimes when I get overly sweaty, I do smell slightly - but my husband has assured me that it is only noticeable by me.
I am going to try out funk butter by Oyin Handmade which I've heard wonderful things about.

I sweat a lot less now that I use crystal roll-on deodorant than I did when I used commercial anti-perspirant. I eased into by using the natural type only on home/low activity days at first. Now, I use the natural types every day all the time and have for several years. I do still use commercial travel sizes, though. I traveled with the crystal spray version in a tiny pump spray bottle and it leaked all out of the container due to air pressure changes (drove up a mountain from sea level). I purchased a new travel size of something in a light green container. LOL It works fine, but I have since found a small crystal rock that stays in the base well and plan to use that for traveling when the green container stuff is gone...

The crystal deodorant roll-on works perfectly for my husband and me. I have also heard good things about Pit Putty, so I may try that soon.
I bought the Oyin Funk Butter, but cannot recommend it. Even using the unscented version, I developed 'pits of fire', and had to give it up. I think the baking soda is the irritant. Some can use it successfully, but there are many of us who simply cannot.
I hope you soon find something that is great for YOU!

Hi-
I've been using Oyin's Funk Butter for a few months now and have been very happy with it! I was a little nervous about switching in the beginning of the summer, but it has worked out really well. It doesn't block the sweat, but it does help to absorb it. You can reapply on super sweaty days if you need help with the wetness, but the odor protection lasts AT LEAST 24hrs.
One word of caution though, some people are too sensitive for the ones with fragrance, so I would suggest starting out with the unscented version. Also, be careful using it immediately after you shave...wait at least an hour if you can.
Good luck!
