OMG they showed the wound on TV

I actually wasn't going to post because I thought it was not going to bother me but I can't stop thinking about it.
That horrible show "Bringing Home Baby" they were saying that the poor child was circ'd the day before and the nurse taught them a technique to make it less "uncomfortable" blah blah. anyway, they showed it. The raw area. I am crying. I can't believe how upset I am, I'd never seen it before.
Sorry, i guess I just needed to tell someone.

I hate that.

It's so sad/disgusting that they would show that sort of stuff on TV...I mean isn't that illegal for them to show a baby's penis on TV???!!! Why doesn't the FCC fine them for that?

I know, it's so sad that they show the result of the mutilation like that. Like it's 'no big deal'! Yeah, lets show them having surgery without medication, and FILM it...then watch the uproar.

I just saw it too- and that is a good enough reason not to do it...it's just so unnatural- thanks for pointing it out- I wouldn't have noticed

Okay, sorry, I didn't see the show, so all I know is what OP said, but isn't it better that they admitted that babies do experience discomfort, and showed the wound? It's more honest than claiming the baby didn't even notice, and then blurring everything later on. I'm not saying there's anything good about what happened, after all the poor boy got mutilated, but isn't it more likely to make first time parents think if they see the wound circumcision leaves?

I'm glad they showed it! Concern about caring for a newborn's raw, open sore penis was what first led me to question circing. I think many parents don't even think about it, and then all of a sudden they are stuck with a hurting baby who they are scared to even touch for fear of hurting him more.

Gah. Poor babies! I can't even imagine.

Charlene,
I think i would agree with you but the parents and narrator were so flip about it. Like, "see this is what baby boys do and it isn't bad! just apply pressure and it's fine!"
Maybe I'm wrong, I guess they should show it more if it will stop people from doing it. I was just saying it made me sad for that particular baby.

That's pretty deeply disturbing that they were flip about such a violent and unnecessary thing, it does not bode well for that boy's future.

I'm glad they showed it. It's all this cultural secrecy we need to stop. The whole taking the baby away, doing it, and bringing the baby back and saying "He didn't even cry," HAS to stop. At the very least one parent should be in the room. I think that would start reducing rates.

Yes, I think I'm coming around to the idea. I guess I just HATE IT! I didn't need to see it to know I would never do it.

Showing it w/o ALSO reinforcing that it is completely unnecessary doesn't always work though. People already have the rationale that it is something necessary, that a little hurt now is better than something awful later.

But there are many that will at least think more.... And if there is ever a doubt placed it might feed off of that.

Seeing it makes ME want to puke, so hopefully people that are on the fence see the raw red wound and have second thoughts.

If people saw that enough times, they would 'get use to it'.

Think about the first horror flick you saw or your first gruesome violent movie. When you keep watching images of the like, you become desensitized to it.

Maybe, they did this on purpose to further desensitize the American culture.

I do hope it saved a few babies from this cruel practice. Seeing a raw bloody circ wound was the ONLY thing that changed my friends' stubborn mind against it. After all the info I gave her and the time I spent with her talking about it she was still leaning towards doing it. Then, one day she went to visit her friend who just had her baby and he was newly circ'd. She saw his bloody wound. It freaked her out. She cried over that image the rest of that day. Suffice to say, her LO is happily intact.

How often do we hear it's "just a little snip." I'm glad they aren't white washing it.

DB's friend had his son circd recently and I saw his gf changing the baby's diaper. The area looked so raw and sore. I can't believe anybody would think that was a good thing.

I am surprised they allowed it on the show. They usually don't show the babies' genitals.
