This was sent to my AP group and Suzzanne has given permission to re-post it so I thought you all might be able to help. Thanks.
My husband is a licensed naturopathic doctor. He is also a "terminal" cancer survivor & a "terminal" cancer patient. In 2003 my husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He went through chemo & radiation, only to learn from the surgical oncologist we finally went with that those therapies don't help this kind of cancer. He finally had surgery in April 2004-- a 22lb tumor removed.
I breast fed my son until he was 3years & 4 months old. (My son is now 17 years old.) He was so healthy! I wanted to get milk for my husband, so I obtained breast milk for him from "The Mother's Milk Bank" in San Jose`. It was really expensive... but we managed at that time. It brought his white blood cell count up between chemo sessions & we believe helped prevent metastases after surgery. It really strengthened his immune system & gave him more energy.
This January (1/04/08) he was diagnosed with a recurrence. All of the oncologists had thought it would come back within 6 months after that massive surgery. This time the oncologists have no options for us. They have told him to "get his things in order". Of course that is their projected outcome, not ours.
This time we cannot afford to buy milk from the milk bank. We have had a few donations of breast milk from friends & friends of friends...& have put up a sign at a health food store 2 doors from my yoga studio. We haven't had any milk donations in almost a month now. We have a website about my husband's battle with cancer & it includes links to websites about breast milk & cancer. There was a study done on cancer & breast milk. Here is my amazing husband's website (www.caringbridge.org/visit/johnlynch)
Of course the health of your babies is of utmost importance. I also realize the time & energy put into pumping milk. However, we would be so grateful for any breast milk donations that can be spared. Due to shipping costs these days, we would perfer local donations.
With care,
Suzanne Strachan
