Hi - I just started a poll in the VBAC section - I'm just trying to collect data on how many VBACs are interested in hospital birth, but end up at home because either their hospital "bans" VBACs, or they can't find any supportive doctors to work with.
ACOG's restrictive guidelines on VBACs, which have led to hundreds of VBAC "bans" and thousands of OBs denying care, are actually forcing some women, who would prefer a supportive hospital VBAC birth, to do a homebirth instead. Don't get me wrong, I fully support homebirth (I had a VBA2C homebirth last year), but I also strongly believe that women should have the option of a VBAC hospital birth, if they prefer. I support options and choice.
Unfortunately, I don't think ACOG will change their restrictive policies because it is the right thing to do, I don't think they will change their policies because the evidence shows that VBACs are safe and repeat cesareans carry risks. However, I think when ACOG realizes that VBAC women are flooding to homebirth midwives, and even doing unassisted childbirth in droves now - THAT'S when ACOG might actually do something to make VBACs supported again.
So if you had a VBAC homebirth, or are contemplating one, please take a few seconds to go over and vote. Thanks!
