I need help resizing this hat pattern

Here's the link to the pattern I used.
I used size 3 needles and 100% Bamboo yarn and the smallest size, and it fits my toddler

I think my gauge is about twice hers, but I really have no idea how to reduce the size. I'd like both newborn and 6-12mo sizes.
Do you just take x amount of stitches from each "side"? I don't want to use smaller needles, 3 is about as small as I'd like to go.
I know I should know this kind of thing, but I don't, and I need help!

Are you using a similar weight wool? (Can't really help, being a newbie to patterns like this, but am trying...) A thinner wool would make the hat smaller too.

maybe try this pattern? http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/cisco/cisco.html omitting the ears.

It's got a bigger gauge.

The bamboo yarn looks to be the same weight as the yarn she used, and I am really happy with how that particular pattern turned out.
I am totally in love with it, I just want to make smaller hats!

Maybe I'll just fiddle around with it and see what happens *sigh*

"The bamboo yarn looks to be the same weight as the yarn she used,"

I'm trying to understand. The pattern gauge works out to 6 stitches per inch. You say you're getting twice her gauge so does that mean you're getting 3 st/in? I can't imagine if that is the case, that your yarn is anywhere close to being a sport weight yarn.

so much of the success of a pattern is in the guage swatch. Do it again- very carefully measuring until you come to 6 st/in. If that is impossible- change yarn.

I think I could get the same gauge if I used size 1 needles, but she still doesn't have a newborn size on her pattern, which is what I want, so

With the yarn you're using and the gauge you're getting, you just aren't going to get it with this pattern. Sorry :-(

It would be easy to get a smaller hat with an actual sport weight yarn and smaller needles or even with fingering yarn and the appropriate needles.

If you're on Ravelry, look for the Sweet Baby Cap and read the comments on the project pages. Lots of people have made it in newborn sizes.
