Birth Story:
July 31st, 2008 at 12:55pm Kaitlyn Rose made her entrance into the world at home in the birth tub. Her birth was amazing, intense and beautiful. At around 6:15am I woke up with some fluid in my underwear. I thought it was probably amniotic and decided to go back to bed and rest as much as possible. Ben went to the bathroom and was like, “uh” I think that your water might have broken sweetie
. At 7:15am I had a large amount of water come out while peeing and then mild contractions started about every 4 minutes. The contractions got more and more intense while staying about 4 minutes apart. At around 10:30am they got pretty intense and I could no longer talk during them. Nora (the midwife) was on her way and so was Jenna. Ben was playing with Cody and trying to tell him that I was “ok”. Cody was so cute and said that “mama crying”. We told him that the baby was on it’s way out of mama’s tummy and that everything was ok. The midwives arrived and checked me. I was only 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced! I could not believe it. The contractions were so intense and hard; I thought I was much further along. Jenna arrived and Cody didn’t want to play with her, so she helped me though the labor while Cody hung out with Ben. I felt like I needed to push, but was only 4cm dilated about 30 minutes later. Nora said I needed to relax and let the contractions take over…that I was resisted them and that’s why I wasn’t progressing faster. We all went into the bathroom where I sat on the toilet and labored for about 90 minutes. Those 90 minutes were INTENSE! I tried to relax as much as possible, saying “soft” and “yes”, while Nora and Jenna coached me though each contraction. At one point I remember saying that I didn’t know how much longer I could do this…they stayed with me and encouraged me that I was doing it and could do it! The birth pool was taking forever to get heated but I finally was able to get in at 12:50pm. Immediately I felt like I needed to push and began grunting and bellowing with each contraction. It felt like this baby was going to come out of my bottom! I pushed and pushed and then felt something different. I asked Nora what it was and she said it was the baby’s head! At this point I couldn’t feel the difference between a contraction and no contraction, so just kept pushing. Ben arrived just in time to see the head come out. A few pushes later, Kaitlyn was born with great heart tones. She had blow by O2 to perk up her breathing as I held her in the birth pool. Cody was super excited to see the baby and was right…it was a Girl! She was 9lbs, 2oz and we forgot to take her length. She LOVES nursing and looking around. Cody has been amazing at welcoming her into the family. We are so blessed!
