Getting Frustrated- I need a midwife

I realize I am only 8 weeks, but I am running out of options pretty fast. I had a c-sect with my last birth. It will be a total of 28 months between births, so pretty far into the safe zone as far as a vbac is concerned. I have found a number of midwives in my area, but for one reason or another, none so far are able to attend me in this birth. 2 will be out of town (one in Africa and one in her "vacation home" in Arizona for 3 months), and one is kinda new and doesn't feel comfortable taking on a primary VBAC patient. I respect that, but I am running low on options. I have the number for 2 others, but both are in down town Chicago, which would mean at least an hour drive, or the train and a cab. i even found a MD practice in my area that does home births, but once again, they won't take on a primary VBAC patient no matter what.

The one that is going to Africa isn't scheduled to leave till 2 days after my EDD. it would be cutting it really close, and i am not even sure if she would be willing to take me on. i can just see it coming down to the wire and having both of us kinda freaking out, so not a good idea probably. Plus she lives 90 mins from me, in light traffic.

So, anyone in the northern Il area with MW recommendations? Should I try to get the "new" one to be my MW, or just let that go? She is the closest to me, but not having any personal VBAC experience probably would make her more finicky about little things than a more experienced MW would be. Also, how important do you think it is to secure someone this early? I know there is nothing they are really going to do, right? Do MW's want blood work in the first tri or would the stuff I had done with my last pregnancy suffice? i don't even want to see my first OB. I had a M/C in Feb and he was not exactly supportive when I mentioned having a VBAC. He basically told me to find another doc.

I would try posting this in your tribe. I honestly wouldnt worry about distance at this point. I had a midwife who was 1 1/2 from me in light traffic who I almost went with. I would go for experience, especially if they have shown reservations this early in the game, I wouldnt try to talk them into it. I would call around and see who will take you and worry about distance later.

You also might want to consider UC (unnassisted childbirth) if you're unable to find a midwife that you're comfortable with. I understand that UC isn't for everybody, but it's certainly an option to research.

I actually got to home birth with a MW kinda backwards. I went straight to UC, then backed off it a little when DH got freaked out. I am very confident in myself and what I can do, but I am pretty sure DH would ruin my zen. Maybe getting a doula for him would be the way to go? I need to think more.

Just got off the phone with another MW. She only does them in a birth center. We want ot be home, so they are out.......

I would keep looking. You should have lots of options considering your proximity to the city. Did you try posting in your Finding Your Tribe area? Check out this thread in particular.

ETA: you may also be able to get a m/w recommendation at a La Leche League meeting.

Here's the ICAN locator for IL. Someone on there should be able to give you more info.

I hope this is ok to post.

does the m/w who's going to Africa have a back-up? most m/w's do as there are always going to be times when it's impossible for them to get to you (like times when they are ill). so if you otherwise really liked her, ask her what she would do in the case where you go past your due date and she's on her way to Africa. you can interview the back-up, and can decide from there if you feel comfortable with that possibility. or heck, maybe just go with the backup.
