We tried it a long tome ago when it first came out. My ds was 6.
1st: Very expensive, but reasonable if this is all you use for the year. It can be used as a full curriculum with some creativity: ie: LA, Science, History, Art.
It had some great ideas/projects to do if you want to use it as a full curriculum, just add math. All of it was very beautiful. I remember projects like making butter for the letter B. Cutting out and decorating wearable paper goggles for letter G.
The books just tried too hard to "teach" something. They were very simplified so that the ds could read the historic topics. Although at the end there was a page for the parent to summarize the historic character in the story.
We didn't do the penmanship. I chose to use the Peterson Directed Handwriting program instead.
All in all, it was a fun program for K-2 grade, however my son didn't learn to read with it. We wound up using Alpha-Phonics when he was 9.
HTH!
