False alarm

UGH! I've had early labor for a few weeks now and I know I've been making progress. I lost my mucous plug last Thursday. I usually wake up with strong contractions around 5:00 am - I get up and listen to my hypnobabies and then after a few hours the contractions slow down and go away (having just a few throughout the rest of the day). I'm used to this pattern.

Well, yesterday I woke up at 4:00 am with really strong contractions that didn't go away. I went by my midwives office after dropping off my son at school. She checked me, said I was 4 cm and 80% effaced (she said she could stretch me to 5 cm). She said I should go ahead and go over to the hospital and she would call the midwife (there are 4 in their practice) who was on duty that day and let her know to expect me. I told her I wanted to go home and watch the contractions a little more first.

So, I came home, things slowed down but didn't stop. The midwife on duty called and asked me to come on over because she was worried I would go quickly. DH came home from work and off we went. Checked in, confused the nurse by refusing their routine IV. I did agree to a Heplock because I have GD and I knew they would want to draw blood.

My midwife checked me and no change - still a stretchy 5 cm and a bulging bag of waters. We watched my contractions for a while and they slowed again. I agreed to try a light bit of pitocin (I'm scheduled for an induction on Friday because of the GD) thinking I might save myself the induction. After trying that for about two hours my labor had really stalled.

The midwife offered to keep me over night and try again this morning. We decided to just come home and sleep in our own bed.

This morning I lost more mucous and am having more contractions but nothing like yesterday morning.

I'm tired. I'm going to stay home and take it easy today. And, I'm frustrated but glad I came home and didn't let my water get broken yesterday (as was one of the options).

I'm not looking forward to the induction and I'm seriously considering not doing it. My midwives said they can't go against their backup doc's orders. So, what would happen if I refused, they drop me and I don't have a care provider lined up??? If I just show up at the hospital in labor will they just assign me whatever OB is on duty???

I hope you all are feeling well. I wouldn't wish this type of labor on anyone. I always thought my second would go quickly but he has other ideas.

walk walk walk! seriously, it can help bring the baby down and bring on full blown labor. Good luck! Your baby will be here soon mama :

I would consider insulin-controlled GD a valid medical reason for induction (not diet-controlled, though).

Don't worry, mama! Soon you will have your baby and all of this will seem so insignificant. I, too, have been having early labor symptoms for 3 weeks now. It's so frustrating but it will be worth it.
