One of my favorite blogs NOW has formula advertising

Help me sort this out. I'm very pro-bf and tell everyone every chance I get. I don't really "understand" why moms formula feed (other than the few I've known that really, truly struggled or had breast reductions and couldn't). I know formula is a cultural acceptance in many parts of the country and I do what I can w/ the moms I know etc.

But NOW I have a blog that I love...they are always reporting on BPA in bottles, foods, healthy snacks etc. AND THEY ALLOW FORMULA advertising on their blog.

Am I freaking out for no reason? Is this just the way the world is? I wrote to the blog owner and expressed my concern, w/ no answer. This morning, I received an email about an update on their blog about the dangers of corn syrup, potato chips and marketing to children. Don't ya think they're being a little hypocritical????

What type of blog is it? They might not have a choice who advertises on the blog (I don't know too much about blogs, though, so I might be wrong about this). Is the ad a banner ad or is it one of those Google related ads? I've seen Google related ads in places where it might be related to the topic, but the person posting would'nt have agreed with the ad.

Even if it's a google ad, they should be able to block formula ads. MDC tries hard to do so. No, you are not freaking out for no good reason.

I would let the blog owner know that you are concerned about it. She might not even be aware. If she isn't super technical and is using something like Google Ads, she might need to look into how to block certain things. It just may not have crossed her mind.

Good point! It says powered by "mobile commons" on it. I don't know what that means, do you???

I did send an ad to the blog owner and got no response. I have sent them emails before (usually telling them how grateful I am) and I've always received a response. Maybe I'll send another email.

Isn't there HCFS in form ula?

If they are sending email updates about "the dangers of corn syrup", there's a contradiction. Maybe your blog owner doesn't realize that for mula is actually on the list of safety issues they should be warning their mom readers away from!

(thanks pp for the awesome suggestion about not using the complete "f-word" here, so it won't get picked up by the search engine ad spies!)

You know, I think I like the "for mula" way of breaking it up... kinda like "for moolah" which it IS, is it not?

I think that's my new spelling from now on. Artificial breastmilk, or baby formoolah!

Another good reason to call it what it really is folks-- artificial milk.

I've removed some posts to this thread and reopened it for discussion. Please avoid discussion of the ads and advertising companies here so that we can keep the thread open. Any questions or concerns about advertising here at Mothering can be posted to Questions & Suggestions.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure last time I took a look at a formula can it included HFCS.

Maybe make a comment in her entry about HFCS and see if she will respond there.
