I have a friend who is an LC. Unfortunately she lives 3 hours away and I don't get to see her very often. Well, she was in town this past weekend. It was the first time she's seen DS (and he's almost a year). Throughout this year, though, I've been keeping her updated on our struggles.

Well, she came and watched him latch on, then checked his tongue tie, lip tie, and palate and she's said she's amazed I can still even latch him on at all. She's really educated herself on tongue tie and palate formation and she said I'm totally lucky he doesn't have a cleft palate. I'm not as educated on these matters as I guess I should be, but she said his palate formation is very "close" to being a cleft palate.

She said, "I know you mourn the loss of a normal nursing relationship, but you could have been dealing with a whole different and much more serious issue."

That really put things into perspective for me. She joked that she is perhaps the biggest lactivist I will ever know, but that even she can see when a woman has done all she can. We sat on the floor bawling over my nursing relationship. How crazy is that!?!?
