Impressed with Lamaze magazine

I preregistered at the hospital yesterday just so I'd have all my bases covered in the event of transport. I was looking through all the junk they give you when you preregister and was pleasantly surprised to see that this year's edition of Lamaze magazine mentions homebirth numerous times in the first few articles!

"Conventional wisdom says that childbirth should happen in a hospital with a doctor, but if you're healthy and have a low risk of complications, giving birth at home or in a birth center is just as safe as (and sometimes even safer than) a hospital."

"What you really need is a comfortable environment and lots of support so your body can do its job. That's just what you'll get in a birth center or your home: a team trained in labor support that sees birth as a normal life event rather than an emergency waiting to happen."

"When a woman gives birth in her home, surrounded by family and friends who believe that birth will happen naturally, she is aware on an intuitive level of her ability to give birth......In today's hospital environment, it's sometimes difficult to trust the normal, natural process of birth and stay confident as labor progresses."

"Of course, it's easier to feel comfortable and safe in a familiar place, so you may choose to give birth in an out-of-hospital birth center or at home."

"Birth can safely take place in homes..."

"If you are giving birth at home or in a birth center, your midwife will pay attention to the physical condition of you and your baby and guide you through the labor and birth. In a hospital, doctors and nurses will evaluate your progress and attend to your physical needs, but because there are other patients, they cannot provide the continuous support that leads to the best birth experience."

How cool is that! And they also had an article on cosleeping, of all things! I'm just tickled that this kind of stuff that used to be considered the realm of hippie whackadoos on the fringes is now slowly being accepted into the mainstream. I wonder how many new moms will read that magazine and start to think about homebirth as an option for them?

I have also been very surprised and impressed by "Fit Pregnancy". No advertisements for formula, supportive of co-sleeping and natural childbirth. A lot of articles unfortunately still say things like "talk to your doctor about..." but lots also say "doctor or midwife".

I recently was reading through my old 1st aid manual (I'm no longer certified) from the course I took 7 years ago.

I was VERY impressed with the advice they had for helping out with an "emergency childbirth". They said things like "when the mother is ready to push - have her lay on her back - BUT if she would rather take a different position - use that". And "The placenta will deliver on it's own - DO NOT pull on the cord. Encourage the mother to nurse the newborn to stimulate uterine contractions. It may take over 20 minutes for the placenta to deliver"...

It was full of information which most homebirthers know to be true. It was kind of amusing to see the conventional medical wisdom first - and then what any homebirther will tell you.

Especially things like it lists the signs of transition and pushing () and then says "If the mother tells you the baby is coming - believe her!"

I love reading those emergency childbirth manuals...it really makes you think, "if this is all you need to do, why do they do so much other crap at the hospital?" I mean, WE know why, but most other people might not.
