32 hours of labor - Birth Story

I woke up around 6 am on August 3rd unable to sleep. I felt fine. K and I did a lot of running around the day before and had even made it out to the movies that morning to see the new Mummy movie I was dying to see. Well, around 7:30 I decided to go back to bed since he wasn't up and I was finally getting sleepy. I thought I would surprise him by wanting to DTD so we did. Just as I was climbing over him, I felt a trickle. As soon as I hit the bed, I felt a trickle run down. My first thought was that I peed on myself. After I climbed back out of the bed and let my feet hit the floor, the floodgates opened. I yelled for K to wake up because my water broke. He screamed because he couldn't believe it either. It seemed the water just did not want to stop so I jumped in the tub (yea, I panicked). After calling my parents and letting them know this was it, we both showered and got dressed.

I must have changed clothes twice because the waters kept coming. I mean, it was like Niagra Falls or something. We finally left the house about an hour later and met my aunt at the hospital. After the midwife checked me and confirmed that my water had indeed broke, things moved along slolwy. Apparently I was dilating very slowly and it ended up causing serious distress to Kendall.Eventually I got stuck at 6 cm. I couldn't sit up because it was would raise my blood pressure so I spent the next 16 hours laboring on my sides. Yes, 32 whole hours of labor and half of it was without an epidural. I swear I'm a gangster! LOL I snatched K up a couple of times because the pain was extruciating and he was the only person for me to grab. My parents and aunt moved to the far corner and laughed because kept asking them, "why didn't you tell me she would freak like this?" My dad said, "Dude, I told you that from day one and you haven't seen anything yet." I mean, I have never felt pain like this before. I put my ipod and tried to get focused and it helped some.

Because my dilation was so slow after laboring all night, they decided that a C-section would be best for both Kendall and I and we agreed. He was born at 3:26 pm on August 4, weighing 6lbs 1.9 oz, and measuring 19 inches long. He is such a quiet and content baby. We're still having some difficulty with breastfeeding but his bottle appetite is picking up. I'm just grateful and blessed for a healthy child. Other than that, everything is great. We may end up going home today or tomorrow, Friday the latest. I have some staples in my tummy that will have to be removed from the c-sec but I'm doing well.

K is the happiest man on the earth. He has done so well with getting up with him everytime he cries and taking care of him. Since I've been pretty bed ridden, it's all on him and he hasn't complained once.

Oh, hon! Labor is hard especially with limitations like that.

I'm glad you are recovering well. Make sure to ask if the hospital has a certified lactation consultant to help you with nursing. If not then contact La Leche League as they are usually better than the "lactation nurses" that many hospitals have which just don't have enough training.

Update from last night: turns out his levels weren't down last night and that he needed the top light. They kept him int he nursery and DP and I went down to check on him at 3 am. He was doing fine. So this morning the ped doc comes in and says that his levels are great for his age (a few days) and that they will check him again later today and if the numbers stay the same or go down, they will release him today. My doc wants to release me but I told him I'm not leaving without my child. He said hopefully we can both go home today but definitely tomorrow.
