RRP modifications - what works?

I have just started to experiment with RRP. I am an experienced sewer but this is my first foray into diaper making. I like the RRP pattern (and so great that it's free!) but wondered what mods others have made with success (or not so much success).

Currently I've made:

1) one flannel/flannel, stuffed with either a hemp/cotton flat, or a prefold, and then use a BSWW cover. This works fine.

2) one flannel/microfleece stuffed as above, with some extra elastic in the back to keep it from gaping. This is essentially a stuffed AIO but I am getting wicking at the elasticized legs where the flannel flares out. Soo...

3) I tried another flannel/microfleece but narrowed the flannel through the crotch a bit and rolled the fleece inwards a bit when I put the leg elastic in. This worked pretty well, but I'm not confident that it would contain poop.

Should I stuff it with something else to make it a little less bulky? Is there any modification to the pattern or placement of anything that would give a better fit? I have some Aplix but no snap press. Pins don't scare me (well ok they do a bit). I have a long thin babe with legs of average chubbiness. Any advice would be appreciated!

I've been playing with this pattern too. For less bulk I like to stuff with an infant prefold-when it's trifolded it isn't as wide as a regular prefold and not as long. If it's overnight or if we will be in the car awhile I'll add a folded microfiber cloth. My fav fabric combo so far has been t-shirt jersey on the outside and microfleece on the inside. It's kind of stretchy so I can get a good fit. I like to keep the microfleece on the inside because it passes liquid through it so the surface stays dry and poo doesn't stick to it for easy clean up. I think for an AIO with a fleece outer you would be better with regular fleece instead of micro. In my experience micro will pass the liquid through but regular will resist liquid. So far I have tried Aplix but since the tabs are so long and kind of overlap it seems really bulky, I like to just pin better. I could modify it to accomodate the aplix but then I think I would lose the multi-size feature. I don't have a snap press (but really would like one) either so I haven't tried that.

There was another thread I started where I got a few suggestions for RRPs. Right now I really like using the flannel/flannel. Then I put the pocket in the front and an elastic in the back. I like that combo. I should take some pics and post them, but the dipes are dirty right now.

I thought of putting aplix on them for dh, but I really like pins. So I just use that. I guess if I did use the aplix, I would keep the back without elastic and trim down the wings a bit.

I have been loving flannel/flannel with a 2 layer flannel internal soaker and a 4 layer flannel semi attached soaker. then if I need to add in a doubler I can stick it under the semi attached soaker. (I don't do the pocket thing....) I let my kids go coverless alot because I tend to overstuff diapers- but I use wool or bumkins covers and they are so cute and trim!
