What's the deal with the nurse in? I have no one to nurse but I don't live very far away and I could go and offer support.

So, do all women swimming in the pool have to prove they are not lactating? Because if breastmilk is such a concern, then having a lactating woman in the pool at all might be a problem--you never know when I might leak a little, after all! How do they know if a woman is lactating or not?

I thought the news article was we written and the news report was really well done but was slightly irritated by the comment that went kinda like this:
When I got the letter I thought that the mother was exagerating, maybe they just asked her to put a blanket over her or cover w/ a towel but NOT harrassment. What does she think asking a mother to cover while nursing is? It is DEFINATELY harrassment!!! |
over Haycook's words...I expected a lot better from the BF coalition. I really can't figure out her motive in saying that--all it said to me was "it's reasonable for someone to ask a woman to cover with a blanket while bfing."

I like the way it was handled, but I'm wondering why they all referred to "people" breastfeeding? As far as I know, only *mothers* breastfeed and thus deserve the feminine pronouns of she/her, rather than the genderless "they" or "people."

I have not read all this thread - only the OP.
Please read these documents that were prepared after a NIP incident in Edmonton, Alberta Canada a few years ago. The mom involved was an IBCLC, nurse and lawyer (!) and her dh is a law professor (wrong person to discriminate against). Please use this research and report in responding to this incident. With this report, the mom was able to have the municipal policy on bfing completely rewritten. Here are the documents that may help you: http://www.breastfeedingalberta.ca/advocacy.htm\ Scroll down to the Breastfeeding Action Committee of Edmonton. It was formed after this breastfeeding in a municipal pool incident in 2002. Janice |

policy does not need to be rewritten. In FL, we are legally "permitted" to nurse in public, wherever we are legally allowed to be and we are "permitted" to expose our entire breasts including nipple in order to feed our babies. what needs to be rewritten? we have a great law, just no penalty for someone who breaks the law by harassing us.

I don't think it has to be limitted, because a really great SO will be completely supportive of BFing, even if they can't do it themselves. My DH makes sure to help out when I've got the LO connected, because I've got pretty much 1 1/2 good arms to use, so I'm not inclined to walk around, or even reach very far. If we're out someplace, and it's snack time, he'll find me a chair, bring me water, or pass me a rag if I start leaking on the other side.
If a guy can help out, then I'd say that's taking part in Bfing the child. And IMO, guys should be proud to be able to take part in it. |
: When I talk to someone not in our family about our parenting choices, I say "we" breastfeed, "we" homebirth, etc....he is as much a part of this team as I am!

Just want to help and support. NIP complaints in pools comes up over and over again, and reading about another mom that was able to change the policy and training in a large city, can be very supportive and encouraging.

Yeah I thought the same thing. And isn't she the head of the breastfeeding coalition? Not cool.
