National Geographic Channel Taboo Episode

National Geographic did an episode of Taboo called Extreme Kids on 8/6/08, last night. I only caught the final few minutes of it, but I wished I saw more. They had a mom who was bfing her 5yo. They were explaining how in other cultures women bf until at least 4, and said that scientist believe that compared to other primates, humans shouldn't naturally wean until at least 2.5yo. This woman who was bfing said that her 5yo child is more independent then her older child who was weaned at 18mo. They brought up the subject of western culture thinking that children should be weaned right away to make them more independent and how studies have shown that to be untrue.

I was so surprised that I saw this and excited to share. I hope those who are interested can see the full episode, because I'm sure that I didn't do it any justice.

I love that show.

DH has a season or two on DVD, I'll have to check to see if he has that one.

I really miss the National Geo. Channel. We can't afford the extended cable package, just basic, but I always found that show to be really interesting and informative. I'm glad that they cared to do a show about this and provide actual research, not just American propaganda.

NG's green guide is also (while still focused on products) the one mainstream soure on the whole green craze to actually cover info that goes all the way-- as in, pretty crunchy me was not annoyed as usual but learned things and enjoyed it. So I am happy to hear this but not surprised! But be the whole world perspective they get.

They were heavy worded and did a bit of the 'shock factor' over exaggeration at first - but in the end, they spoke of how 'full term' nursing was absolutely best and positive.

Unfortunately, I think this message may have been lost after all of their 'one sided, inappropriate' talk.


Don't get me started on the 3 year old cage fighters.
