How do you keep your basement clean?

We just moved into a house with an unfinished basement. It was like something out of a horror movie with all the spiderwebs : My dp swept through it, but everytime I go back down...there's more!!!

Is there any way to keep them from coming back??

In our old house, I used to go down with the shop vac and vacuum them up. I did it about every week or so for a while, paying special attention to the rafters and corners, and it really cut down on the amount of new ones. I noticed I often vacuumed up egg sacs, so I'm sure that cut down on the numbers of new ones! Then when the bag was about half full, I'd change it, and cover the openeing on the old vac bag with masking tape to keep anything inside from getting out.

I liked the vacuum method because it meant no spiders falling from above like they sometimes did with the broom. Plus, any spiders were automatically contained, and I didn't have to worry about where they were going like with the broom.

I agree with vacuuming. It is far more efficient than sweeping. The key is to do it regularly. This time of year may require daily visits. Once you get most of the adults and babies that are alive now, you'll have an easier time maintaining with less frequent visits with the vacuum.
