Can milk kefir grains die?

Yes, I am clueless. I got some milk kefir grains, about a tablespoon. I was making some really yummy kefir for a few weeks there, then the other day, they did NOT work. The milk just soured a bit and separated. Also, my grains have never multiplied.

Hmmm, they look the same. I'm in bed fighting sleep now, so I'll have to go feel them tomorrow.

They don't usually die out of the blue though, usually they die because they're not fed.

Sometimes though they don't like the milk they're in.
