Do you Hula Hoop or Want to Learn? - Page 5

i love it love it!!! been hooping EVERYDAY for almost 2 months!!!
just an FYI... i originally got white tubing that is meant to be connected with an outside connector but i didn't know that and had gotten the inside connecter, i rigged it anyway. for those looking to make your own stick to the black tubing. which i have now thanks to my cousin’s water pipe breaking, i never would have spent the money on a huge roll, but he did and gave me the rest, which is a lot.
i have made one for a birthday girl and some more for christmas presents

Thanks. I have actually now hooped a couple of times but being limited to indoor hooping has put a damper on things. I am not lucky enough to have a basement (would not want one where I live either since they tend to flood pretty easily around here).

When you get good you will have to take a video and post it for us!!

I'm so glad I found this thread! :

I discovered hooping earlier this summer at the Britenbush summer solstice festival and I thought it was so much fun. I looked around my area for classes or workshops but couldn't find a single one. I got discouraged and decided to just forget it for now.

Somebody reminded me about hooping a couple days ago and I decided that if I couldn't find a class I was just going to try to learn on my own. I found that site about how to build your own hoop last night and I made two hoops today: one for my daughter and one for myself. They turned out pretty nice and I am so excited to give mine a shot!

One problem, though: my living room isn't too large and I am afraid of doing some damage to the TV or my potted plants. I can't wait to try hooping outside on a regular basis, but with 8 inches of snow on the ground and four more months of almost constant rain I think I'm going to have to wait. Aaarrrgg! I wish I had some place to hoop!

How do I know how heavy a hoop to get? I am debating between a 3, 4 and 5 lb. water filled one. I have a lot of weight to lose and have never successfully hula-hooped in my life. Lol! Help...
Thanks...

I had surgery in the spring so I'm out of practice. It's so much fun!

So I'm totally stoked now. I always loved hooping - it was definitely my favorite part of gym growing up! And to find out how easy it is to make your own heavier, not bent hoop is fantastic! Y'all are my inspiration!!! :

Ditto!! I have been thinking that I really need to get some more physical activity but I've never been a go-to-the-gym type of gal. I also need a reason to get outside more often. I LOVE hula hooping, but I've only used the toy store ones, and done the regular old style. I pride myself on winning two hula hoop contests when I was like 10 and 14 years old. I always admired the hoop girls in shows, but now that I now I can make my own hoop??? And learn tricks on YouTube?? Hell yeaaahhh, I am in! :

I just ran out and bought some pipe from Home Depot. It says 3/4" PVC IPS. It says nothing about PSI anywhere, and it was the only 3/4" black tube and the store was about to close. When I cut the ties off, it seemed way too flexible. Plus I just noticed the roll is 50ft, not 100. Double Guess I'm taking it back tomorrow.

There's a pic of me with my hoop here: www.hooping.org/archives/002511.html

Cool! I finally got the right tubing and made some hoops. I still don't have gaff tape on it. I'm wondering if that will make a lot of difference. I can get the hoop from around my waist to up around my neck and then lift an arm out, but when I try to keep it up around my chest with both arms out, it always slips down. (and I don't have much boobage to help out.) Grrr! I can catch it on my butt though

This is so much fun! I couldn't stop the first few days so I scored some nice bruises. Oops. I'm thinking about doing SaFire's online class after I get a bit better.

Let's see if we can revive this thread by moving it to the Fitness forum.

Thanks for reviving the thread. This looks fun. My daughter is really good at it, but I never have been. I'll have to try again.

ooo! I'm so glad to find this thread! I have been thinking about trying hooping for a while and so a couple nights ago I ordered a hoop! I don't have time to make one. I can't wait for it to get here! I'm hoping with my gymnastics and dance background that I will pick it up pretty quickly. I am totally in love with the safire on youtube. I think her style of movement is gorgeous!

Anyone else still hooping?

awesome, Jenny! I love SaFire, too. I am still hooping--though not as much as I'd like. I am making hoops for people for Christmas, too, and have some up for sale on etsy. So happy in the hoop!!

For those of you who make hoops, is Gaff tape neccessary? I can't find it locally and was wondering if I could just go ahead with vinyl tape...

Thanks!

You can definitely make one w/o gaff tape, just be aware that without the grippiness of gaff, you will have to work harder to keep the hoop up, and learning new tricks will be more frustrating. Wearing cotton and having exposed skin will help though. GL!!

Ok, thanks! I'm so excited!

I've made some without the gaff tape, and I can tell it would be super helpful to have the tape. I've also used some at a fair that had the tape...yeah, I want some gaff tape for the holidays!

Now that it's cold out, I haven't been working on hooping at all. I suppose I could do it in the garage.

I made a few without the gaff tape, but I think I can add it when I get a hold of some. So far, so good!
