Confused about Cod Liver Oil

I'm trying to figure out which cod liver oil to buy.

I thought I read that Nordic Naturals or Carlson's were good brands but then, when I'm researching, I'm finding that maybe they are not the best options??? Something about the vitamins being stripped out and then added back in at the end?

Also, I'm finding discussions that some have synthetic Vit A added back in. How do I know what is the best one to get? Do I have to order it online (VERY expensive!) or, is it something I can get in a health food store?

Some helpful links for you:

Cod Liver Oil: Notes on the Manufacture of Our Most Important Dietary Supplement, will clarify the manufacturing process and the issue of removing and adding back vitamins.

Vitamin A, Vitamin D and Cod Liver Oil: Some Clarifications, will explain dosing and the different types of CLO.

Unfortunately the good CLO can only be purchased online.

Thank you!

So, it looks like the only one I can buy in the store is Garden of Life. I think my HFS has that one. Thanks so much!

One more question?

I'm going to get this one:
http://www.crohns.net/page/C/PROD/GAN7000

It says an adult dose is 1tsp - how about for a child?

TIA!

I would go by the dosing in the second article I posted, so aim for 5,000 iu's of Vitamin A per day. It looks like the Garden of Life CLO has 5,000 iu's in one tsp, so I would give my child that amount a day. I actually at least double dose my kids during the winter months (I use Green Pastures fermented CLO). If you don't feel comfortable with this amount go with 1/2 tsp.

My hubby is a rep for Garden of Life. We think the best brands are Garden of Life, Minami Nutrition (they have a new process that's all "cold", no high temperatures or anything, but are very pricy) and probably the very BEST (but perhaps yuckiest) is Green Pasture's blue ice fermented cod liver oil. =) I can't handle Green Pasture's its just too yucky!

I guess I'm too laid back about it, but I just fill whatever size spoonful tends to be handy and consume it.

Oh, another okay, easy to find budget brand is Twinlab.

I'm going to try the Nordic Natural's cod liver oil. It was recommended by an herbologist I've been speaking with. It was also recommended by the second link above.

NN is fine if you aren't looking for vitamins. It has none. IT is good if you are looking for omega 3 fatty acids and EPA's.
