Best food coloring for homemade play dough?

My son is so 'into' playdough lately, and I'd really like to make ours into some bright, fun colors.

The only food coloring I have at home is the liquid stuff from McCormack, and the playdough turns out rather dull. I suppose I could add about half of one of those little bottles, but won't that change the consistancy of the playdough?

Just for example, these are the bright colors I'd like to achieve.

Wilton's cake decorating colors make a deep brilliant purple, red and blue.

Is that the paste stuff?

It's food-grade coloring and comes in little tiny containers. It's more like just dark paint gel type-of-thing, definitely not like paste. I buy it at Beverly's.

It's definitely good for playdough! Oh and also, you can add lavender essential oil to the purple, rose to the red. I also once added tiny silvery glitter to the purple and it was a neat effect

Thanks for reminding me about the glitter, I meant to try that.

I have some orange oil I intended to add to it this time, just to help with the smell. I don't know why, but the smell of the homemade playdough just makes me gag.

We use kool-aid for ours. I love the smell of it! The colors come out pretty and bright, too.

We use regular old food coloring- but a lot of it. Doesn't effect the consistency.
