Getting BF Legislation moved to a new committee in the State Assembly

has anyone done this in your state? Right now Wisconsin has a good BF bill that has passed the senate but right now it is being held hostage since Feb 07 by a committee chair, Leah Vukmir. The bill is in the Health and Health care reform committee chaired by Vukmir. If it were in the Public Health committee it would have a chance of getting voted on.

I know lots of states have a good law but has anyone successfully gotten this kind of bill or really any kind of bill out of one committee and into another?

Vukmir isn't up for reelection until 2010 and even then she might get reelected. So I hate to just wait till she is gone that might be a really long time.. she was only just elected in 2002.

Yes, but i'm not an expert on the processes but this is the email i got back when i emailed my representative

Ms. Arn,

Thanks for writing. The regular legislative session ended earlier this spring, and all existing bills died at that time. No new legislation can be introduced until the next session begins in January 2009.

The decision concerning the committee to which a bill is referred is made by the Assembly Speaker, currently Mike Huebsch. The Speaker is elected by members of the Assembly to a two-year term. The next Speaker will be elected in January 2009. If this bill is re-introduced next session, whoever is Speaker at that time will decide to which committee the bill is referred.

I agree with you that this bill, if it is introduced in the next session, should be referred to a committee where it will receive a public hearing and fair consideration. This is an important issue to many people and the legislation certainly deserves to be debated.

I appreciate knowing of your support for this proposal. I will give it careful consideration if it comes up again in the next session.
Mark Gottlieb
State Representative
60th Assembly District

It says I will give it careful consideration if it comes up again. not sure what sways that tide. Is anyone out there more informed on the legislative processes.

do you know who sponsored the 1st bill?

Sen. Fred Risser sponsored the first bill, SB 104 (actually, it's the 5th to be introduced and not become law). He is currently the majority leader of the State Senate. I would be greatly surprised if he did not introduce the bill again to the Senate this next session, especially considering the WI women are still being harassing for NIP.

katarn, I have PM'd you with more details.
